Great nuke stories. I've played since CIV 1 and the only version I remember getting nuke in was CIV 2 where it was a regular occurance. The only way to avoid this I found, was to stockpile a bunch of them myself. I remember a game where the zulus kept sending nukes at one city even though it had an SDI until one of them didn't get intercepted. After that it was all about deterent.

Never got nuked in CIV 3 but I didn't use them very often myself and always tried to stockpile a few once the Manhattan project got built.

Haven't seen nukes from the AI yet in CIV 4 but I have played a game where the AI built the Manhattan project.

BTW. Anyone else miss the eco-ranger from CTP 2? Dropping one of those bombs that would wipe all traces of a city from the map was my favorite part of that game.

I have not seen any used by the ai or used any myself. The last big game I had played of Civ3 I used a lot of them, and so did the ai. I don't remember the civ but they were fast conqureing their continent when I plopped a city down in the open space created when the captured the last of their local rival's cities. I had my own continent to my self but they were bigger than me. I filled it up with lots of stuff. They moved a ton of units in huge stacks (like 50 plus per stack!) around this city.

I started the war by nuking the stacks, 10 times. I must have killed hundreds of units. It took out most of their offensive capability. They did not have nukes yet at that point but they got them soon enough. About 5 turns later when I had taken about 1/5 of thier teritory (try doing that in civ4!) their nukes started hitting me. I mad peace with them shortly after I had bitten off a chunk of the southern part of their empire as well, waited about 20 turns building new nukes along the way then wiped them out (about 25 cities!) in one turn. My favorite way to use them was to hit stacks of ships with an invasion force just off the coast. I would target the square just next to them but away from land so I would not get any fallout. Invasions died quite quicly that way.

I have never nuked, or been nuked in civ4. I always seem to have other priorities by the time I learn Fission and building the Manhattan project never seems to make sense.

I remember in Civ3 on Emperor you would never get nuked unless you nuked first (which I did very rarely, global warming was a real ***** in that game). Civ 2 the AI would occasionally nuke first, but if you nuked them, it would not be surprising to get hit by a half dozen retaliatory nukes the next turn. They would fall like rain after that, often fired by multiple AI's.

I honestly dont remember much from my Civ1 days, just the Russian music playing whenever they entered one of my cities or flipped one with a diplomat (I am REALLY glad you can't just bribe cities anymore, that really bugged me).

SMAC has been the best in this regard, so far, and the AI seems to respect the seriousness and atrocity value in WMD, both in building and using them
              yeah thats true
when anybody used a PB in SMAC there was often several war decs the next turn AI or human player it didnt matter

thats one of the things that made SMAC such a great game, the AIs actually persued their own agendas instead of the lame old gang up on the human strat

not to say they wouldnt gang up on you tho

Doesn't the sdi protect against 75% of all nukes fired at your cities?

i have nuked in and been nuked in civ1, civ2, civ3 and SMAC

in civ 1 they were a bit shy using them till i was building the spaceship.

civ 2 every city of thiers had them even the tiny joles oin the middle of nowhere.

civ3 it was the "peaceful" civs like the iroquos :comfused: thought there was one time the zulus tried to aquire my newly aqucired assets with 250 mordern armours, it took 10 mins for the stack to move took 6 nukes. then the iroquious muked me so they got 6 by then every 4 turns global warming came and everyone starved barely managed to squeeze out the ship.

SMAC the only one who didn't PB me was morgan cause he never lasted long enough. Even the bloddy UN charter pushing Lal pb me

As for civ for i have seen mansa musa buld manhatan have the save too.

Also i have used Nukes to slow down 3 civs space ships noone bar me had sdi and they were buliding spaceship parts before i started appollo. Rushed manhatan then converted half my econ to nukes and the rest to spaceship and units built around 35 during the conflicts after the first one they chinese spanish rusiand an aztecs all built sdi in a hurry only about 7 got through either way i bult my ship while they cleaned pollution built bunkers etc all thier biggest cities get hit not much damage though bunkers are too powerfull i think. mine would be fired 35 , 8 got through

thats why i decreased bomb shelters effiency to 50% (from 75) and increased SDI build cost to 2000 (from lousy 600) in my xml fils

I got nuked once in Civ3, by Brennus. We were on separate continents, and I was happily rolling over his cities left and right when he cut loose his missiles, apparently out of desperation. Two missiles out of the barrage got through, and I got to watch the Ottomans and Japanese unload their arsenals on him before my turn came back around. By the time it did, there was little left for me to nuke, and I had a near monopoly on the world's nukes.

In Civ4, I've seen the Manhattan Project built once... by Gandhi.

The most nuke happy version is the SMAC. The PB is a lot scarier than the nukes in Civ games.
