Unfortunately this is all too often impossible unless the unit is only very recently outdated, or there is a player open for attack who is behind militarily or technologically. I usually just upgrade them because the extra thought and effort to get it that one extra promotion tends not to be worth it.

This is interesting. I have always updated my units when they achieved enough XPs for an upgrade. You guys are talking about saving them up?! Only upgrading once they have accrued to a greater extent? I will have to try this.

You seem to mistake promote and upgrade, too (or you posted in the wrong thread).

Upgrade = transform the unit into a unit with higher tech level, for example cavalry into gunships.
In this case all XPs the unit gained are capped at 10 XP so that, if the unit was at a higher levbel at the time of the upgrade, it might have to gain lots of XPs before gaining another level. Therefore it often is useful to keep obsolete units with high experience without upgrading them, at least till they gained the last couple of XP to gain another level.

What you mean is promote units, which gives your unit those special abilities and doesn´t letz your XPs drop to 10 for every level gained.
But of course, saving up the XP and only promoting your units when necessary might often be wise, for one every promotion heals a certain percentage of the damage of a damaged unit and for the other, sometimes it might be useful to upgrade as a response to tactical needs.

I made the mistake of not using promotions before upgrading (which eliminated the promotions).
