Hey - this fixed the warning message and the graphics reset problem - just set HideMinSpecWarning = 1 (instead of 0)! Thanks a lot. I saw someone else mention this in another thread as well.

    That warrants a jolly santa.
Thank you this is a simple fix that I can & will do...but it treats the symptom not the underlying problem...It'll turn off the annoying warning but won't allow me to and my Baffo machine to run the game at full tilt...

It seems like the patch 1.09 allows slower machines to run the game at the cost of turning off the bells and whistles on higher end machines...

There is a Major Memory issue in Civ IV. A fix has been produced that really does work. The thread is sprinting towards 32,000 hits at the time of this post - all in 4 Days!

Its not a dubious amateur hack. If you get CTDs - slow down - reboots - massive save files etc - go now to this thread, its put Firaxis to shame

Current version of the fix is not compatible with 1.52. It either does nothing or crashes. Update addressing this issue is on its way. The patch I was coding during last month is finally out. The patch is compatible with 1.00 and 1.09 versions of civ4. So, here we go. You will need 3...

Are you sure it doesn't work.
As far as I understood, both warning and low detail settings are the same issue. If warning is turned on, it will give warning and reduce graphic levels.

That patch add-on is more of a fail-safe, to reduce complains from playing at high setting with outdated graphics and then compaining that it's slow.

Unfortunately they mocked it up a bit, by putting some cards that worked decent without patch to same below spec. crowd.

Incorrect - you have not read through the patch or talked to those who understand memory management. They have got to the root cause of the memory issues, and it is working. Its not a fi-all, thats crazy, but the number of issues it addresses is growing.

All the developement work was based on low level memory management, not graphics cards. the response has been immense, and successful. There are many other issues in Civ IV of course, that it does not address, but the number of people it has helped grows by the hour - and its not dependent of their graphics card etc either- read the thread carefully.

The thread is at 32,600 hits - you dont get that over 4 days if it has been proven to be a waste of time

#33 absolutely correct it is treating the symptoms, it cant address the cause (the horrible use of Python throughout the whole Core) because obviously they dont have access to the executable. They trap the resulting output, clean it up and represent it to the User. It does not touch existing game code.

I am aware like others, that the internet is littered with so called mega patches from self seekers. This is not one of them, it is a very successful fix to an appauling memory management scheme that was released. Lets hope Firaxis address this within the code base on the first proper patch (whoefully overdue), and not leave it to a dozen gamers to spend 4 weeks of 7x20 working to produce a fix to keep the mess going

Yes, Harkonnen is quite the celebrity at the moment.
I wonder if Vel has any words on the subject.

It's been 2-3 weeks since the patch came out. I haven't downloaded it, nor paid it much attention after hearing early reports that it caused as many issues as it solved.

Has there been any progress with that patch, or plans for a new patch announced?

They won't be fixing the current patch, but with the amount of complaints coming from everyone I have no doubt that a new one is already being worked on. We can only hope it does better than this one.
"You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.
Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess."

Hi there! That's what I thought it would do, but I was wrong! The warning seems to be what is triggering the game to automatically reduce the graphics settings. With the warning off, the game plays fine at the highest settings (as it did for me and I think for you pre-patch). I am thinking the problem for us with the patch is that the warning is being triggered incorrectly. Our graphics card can handle it.

Yes, I agree. I can see how one could say it's a symptom, but the root cause seems to be (as you've said) created by this min req check. It seems to me that this patch element was poorly executed/coded/whatever, and turning off the notification disables it. Fortunately either way, it seems to do the trick.
One of these days I'll make 501 posts, and you won't have to look at my silly little diplomat anymore.

Ok, so the 1.52 patch is out....is the game much better? No, slightly more stable...runs better, even on an old laptop that wouldn't run it before...now it runs...though it takes a long time to load...so what's still wrong?

                                1. No editor
                                2. Balance - still off (units more powerful than others...
                                3. TIME (I'm either getting musketmen in 800 a.d. or 2100 a.d.) - SUCKS!
                                4. Impossible to win over Prince (Seems ok at Noble - but for a challange you MUST chose - Aggressive AI).
                                5. Awful Customs maps...must regenerate over and over again (Continents that look like giant swastikas -sp).
                                6. Not nearly enought civs...(Want me to buy an EXPANSION PACK DO WE?)
                                7. Units - why so few (again, expansion pack rip-off)
                                8. More to come....

THIS GAME IS A GRAPHIC IMPROVEMENT OVER CIV3 but NOT A BETTER GAME - the AI, stinks....and lets face it that's where the game leap really comes from.
