    Thanks for the warning Nikander

I usually deselect the Space Race win option. I've once tried it in an emperor level game but ran into a very annoying bug myself. I was well on my way to a Space Race Victory but as soon as I'd finish the last piece the game would crash to the desktop when the presumed(dunno, cos it crashes) wonder movie starts to play. So, so far no Space Race Victory for me.

Tervetuloa vaan tänne minunkin puolesta, mukava nähdä Kauvatsalaisia civ-pelaajia!

Anyway, it's just a game and I had a blast, but I just wanted to share this with y'all, as a fair warning against Permanent Alliances. Be afraid of them... be very afraid! Or at least know what you are doing. I didn't.
A very unique look at the diplomacy system there. Whilst I'm sure all would agree it very unlikely to be true, it makes the game much more fun to pretend that the AI has deceptively hidden reasons for all its seemingly random or pointless decisions.

I also find the space race victory too awkward at times due to alliances. Whilst I enjoyed winning and losing to the space race a few times, it rather quickly became too tedious to bother so now I tend to deselect space race victory too.

Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess."

Interesting situation...thanks for reporting that. I also deselect space victory and diplo victory for most of my games. Both need greater refinement.
        Haven't been here for ages....

So you're the type of person that thinks that Violence isn't an answer to some of your problems, Violence is THE answer to ALL of your problems.
          I like that. =)

Wouldn't it be possible to sabotage this with a spy?

I had post the same issue in the "suggestion thread", here.

And AI should learn to estimate building time and choose correct cities to build wonders / spaceship parts, i.e. make decisions on national strategy layer of AI, not city governor layer.

Kiitosta vaan, olen asunut paikkakunnalla vasta kesän alusta, mutta kovasti olen seudulla viihtynyt. Kauvatsa on kyllä kaunis pikkukylä. Tänne taidan jäädä...

Ample use of imagination tends to make ANY computer game better. Once you start thinking that you're basically just crunching numbers vs. a machine, the magic is somehow gone...

Good point. I have no idea if spies work against allies (they should, that's what they do in RL ), since this was my first - and possibly last - attempt at an Alliance. Anyway, I hadn't built the Scotland Yard, since spies seem to be rather weak in this game. Maybe I'm mistaken.

Can I request a translation? As a Canadian the only Finnish I know is Saku Koivu, Miikka Kiprusoff, Teemu Selanne,... etc and of course my favourite Finnish finish growing up was Gretzky to Kurri

I'm glad you decided to share your tale. I was planning a Space Race victory in my game. I guess I will have to keep a close eye on my ally and have a plan B in case I come across a similar situation.

Hmm, can't you swap cities with allies? I probably would have tried to trade for the city, which hopefully would stop the building. Then I could start it in the city of my choice (since it would still be my turn).

Just praising my (new) little hometown in Finland, an idyllic country village called Kauvatsa (in southwestern Finland). Nothing to worry about, no conspiracy here.

I actually tried that, but it didn't work. Apparently your allies aren't willing to do just ANYTHING for you. Makes sense, if you think about a RL comparison. Wouldn't happen there either.

Never had the problem with an AI partner building space ship parts in low production back waters. I have (once) had what I thought was a decent chance at a Diplomatic Victory snatched from me when not one, but two, AI Civs I counted on to vote for me (yes, I know, that was my first mistake) joined Alliances and cast self votes for their Alliance instead.

Oh, and insult to injury I lost that game by a Space Ship Victory. I had a quite large, productive empire and arrogantly/ignorantly was not concerned enough to go straight for the Apollo Program or even care when it was built slightly before me by India. There was no way Asoka’s much smaller nation could beat me out once I turned my best cities to making space faring parts. Maybe not. But Asoka, Caesar and Cyrus (IIRC) together could.

I had never seen the AI formed alliance prior to this and I always play with Permanent Alliances on. Learned a hard lesson that day, I did.

when i created an alliance with the AI, i was pretty much aware of the problems you mentioned. so what I did was to queue all space ship parts in my cities, so my AI-ally could not build them.
I only left the casings for them to build

I agree that there should be something like a "why don´t you build..." option...

the good thing about an alliance was that i could spy the ais cities in order to understand how the ai plays tghe game. its far better than ever before.

another thing is that alliances are not shown in the foreign advisor screen. so once the ai start to ally with each other, its real hard to keep up-to-date with it.
