I kind of miss the long marathon games of civ2. My games are too short.

Maybe I'm just not doing enough micromanagement (I hate that). I'm trying to figure out what made my civ2 games so long compared to these.

One reason might be I always played on the largest maps in civ2. I wouldn't even dare to do that here or with Civ3. Maybe I'll lower the graphics settings and play a huge map. I'm tired of standard maps.

I usually play Quick games on Small maps - this takes me between 2 and 3 hours to finish.

Since I can't play saved games, each game lasts until Civ 4 crashes or I turn off the computer.

Can't play saved games?! That sounds horrible!

I envy people who can finish a game in just a few hours. I can spend an hour just mulling over City Placements in the ancient era, or planning a war, or even deciding whether worker-warrior with mining or warrior-worker with mysticism is best for the starting position.

                Each to their own ...

I actually returned Roller Coaster Tycoon III for store credit because I couldn't play saved games.

If you can't save a game, it's surely not worth playing.

Why start anything, come to think of it, if you can't finish it?

just started a game on huge map. Turned animations off and turned graphics down to low. The game still looks pretty good at these settings and I can play the wonder movies without stuttering (though I could do this before the patch too- it was the patch that screwed up my wonder movies).

The game is still going quickly. I should note that I only have 9 civilizations on a huge map. Gives me plenty of room to expand. . I hate being crowded in. I know it's an advantage to the human because the ai really would take so long to send units to attack me. Sucks for them.

But of all the 11% land area I have, I still don't have coal. .

According to the builtin counter my first game took something about 5 hours. The default world size, default game speed, archipelago world. However I think that it was much more.

yeah I think that counter is screwed up. My games seem longer.

I just finished my first ever Civ game (won space race in 1994). I played Noble and standard everything else. The counter said 18 hours. I guess I am kinda slow compared to most of you. But consider if you had never played a civ game before, there is one heck of a lot to learn.

11 hours on standard, 15 on large maps. Doesn't seem to matter what kind of map it is, its always within 30 minutes of those hours. Going from noble to prince did add a half hour though

Thanks everyone for contributing to this thread!

I guess I am not doing too bad then, considering this is my first contact with strategy games.

If I may, one answer prompted a question:

                              Dis writes:

Where lies the advantage? I don't understand what the variables or cause/effect are here?

                              Ciao,

                                never more than 6 hours
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.
