... I would HATE it if it doesn't get any better with the addition of 1GB of RAM, for the price of which I could buy 2 more new games.
Please post the results of your upgrade, if and when you go through with it. I'm wanting and yet unable to play the scenarios. Looks like I might need to add another gig of RAM. Might get myself a little christmas present, but would like to know if it will actually help.

I have run large maps without anything more than late-game lag using a pitiful 512MB of memory.

        but how about on Huge??
try that, and have 11 AIs. If you can manage to get to 2000AD without CTD let me know.

crash problem solved! (on my computer)

          Hope this helps:

1.00 - multiple crash to desktop in later huge games - no reboots

1.09 - multiple crash to desktop in later huge, and a few complete re-boots - the patch didn't fix anything but it made saves faster.

I have a P4-3.2GHz, and ATI AIW 800XL, 1G ram. Current Catalyst drivers.

          I did the following:

          1. patch to 1.09
          2. Windows custom swapfile, maxed out 4096 MB, on drive (E, separate from Windows (C and CIV4 (D
          3. Disabled Music (left on all other sounds / sound effects)
          4. Playing at 1600x1200, AA = 0.
          5. Playing in WINDOWED mode (no full-screen)

The windowed mode takes up the whole full screen so it looks the same (I have to click on the title bar and drag the screen up a little to be able to see the bottom - i.e. the title bar goes off the top of the screen). Only disadvantage to Windowed mode, as far as I can tell, is that I can't use the mouse at the edge of the screen to scroll the map.

Have not had a crash again - now in 1980 on a huge map.

I haven't had time to figure out if remedy 2, 3, or 5 by itself will work. I know 1 and 4 do not work by themswelves.

          Hope this helps.

I didn't have much problem until the year 1990s, so keep playing.

You can make the Windowed mode work better by clicking on the Maximize button.

No reboots in Windowed mode, ever.

No any kind of reboot after 1.09

Option 2 does not help -- I've always run my Windows that way ever since 95.

I haven't tried disabling the music.

turning the music off didn't help a bit.

I've turned off the music, switched to windown mode, lowered texture detail etc. Nothing works- it still crashes constantly, and with the new patch it's several times a turn.

I've just abandoned my game on the huge map, which is a pity 'cos it takes a fair amount of time to reach the end game. I'll just wait for a proper patch and play on smaller maps in the meantime.

Crashes definitely fixed for me (huge map) year 2020 - conquest only game

Played through to 2020 now - no crashes. Previously I was crashing 1-3 times per turn. I will try to test each of the different items. But it is definitely one or a combination of the following three:

                  1. 4 gig swap file on different drive
                  2. windowed mode
                  3. no music (all other sounds on)

I still save at the end of each turn -

Perhaps unique to my situation is that I'm trying a 2-civ game on a huge map (me vs. the computer).

Just to chime in. I have very similar problems even on a Large map with the default number of comp players. I have tried everything listed in this thread with nothing working.

                    Specs:
                    P4 - 3Ghz
                    1 GB RAM
                    ATI Radeon 9600
Patch 1.09 did fix the rendering problem for me but made the CTD worse.

I'm thinking the built-it sound card on my Soyo mobo may be the culprit now. Very frustrating.

I was getting by in a good game with the Quick Save and reload strategy until my Quick save file got corrupted and I lost about 10 turns - that ruined it for me.

So it suggests that the problem has to do with:
                      A. the number of Civs in game, OR
                      B. the amount of STUFF in game,

not just the size of the map.

Can you load up the save doc and I will see if it will run on my system. One that has already failed for you. I only want to play a few turn, not hundreds.

I have a machine with 3GB of RAM. Pre-patch, I regularly crash on worker orders. Post-patch, I get regular crashes with Catalyst 5.11 drivers in the late game, but it's fine with 4.12. I still eventually crash if I use a custom-modified map generator to make an extra-huge map.

I wonder if Firaxis will get round to properly optimizing the code by the time they release the expansion pack. A game like this just shouldn't be using gigabites of RAM.

and apparently huge gigabites of RAM doesn't even solve the problem
                              Haven't been here for ages....

Perhaps I'll hold off on buying that extra Gig of RAM for myself for Christmas... I really don't have need for it otherwise.
