  • Russian city names

In my current game I play the Russians. But the city naming seems to be borked. The 5th city is Yaroslavi, and it won´t go beyond this. It promptly wants to name all cities after this one to Yaroslavi' (with the apostroph after). What´s up with that? I checked the CIV4CivilizationInfos.xml file, and it looks good with at least 20 names after Yaroslavi...

It´s only slightly annoying, but still...

I played as Peter the Great with the patch. Somehow I think the patch is more to blame than Peter

If you refuse to use a particular name, it will keep trying to use it. I tried changing Yaroslavl' to cities I knew that didn't have an apostrophe in the name...Novosobirsk, Vladivostok, etc...and until I finally accepted Yaroslavl', it wouldn't advance. Kinda dumb to have a city with a punctuation mark at the end though. It's like having a city named "New York!"

Hmm, I'm having the same problem. It's odd because, as you say, it looks fine in the file. There's no ' in it. No idea where it's getting that from.

What works (or, did for me) is to accept the name with the ' in it, then rename it later. Because you accepted, it'll move on in the names list.

There´s no Yaroslavl' in the XML-file. It must be some kind of bug, but I´m at a loss as to what could be causing it.

I did this, but it continued to name the new cities Yaroslavl' I had to change it manually every time.

I open the file with a text editor and I see that this city name has indeed an apostrophe. That's true for the English and the Italian version.

The apostrophe stands for the "soft sign," one of the letters of the Cyrillic alphabet, Russian version. It indicates that the preceding consonant is palatalized, meaning that the tongue is pressed to the roof of the mouth (palate) at the end of the consonant sound.

Some transliteration systems omit the soft sign when it occurs at the end of a word, but it is actually more correct to include it always.

This is a Swedish conspiracy....and i suspect Agent Kamrat is responsible -- under the direction of the evil Doctor Zoidberg. Hurray!

I don't know if this is causing the problem, but I noticed that the city name has different spellings in different files.

In the file Civ4CivilizationInfos.xml the city name appears as YAROSLAVI with the final letter a capital "eye".

However, in the file Civ4GameTextInfos_Cities.xml we find both YAROSLAVI as above and Yaroslavl with the final letter a lowercase "el" (both with and without the final apostrophe, depending on the language version).

At least this explains why some don't see the final apostrophe in the name, while Martin did see it.

There's a town here in England called Westward Ho! with the exclamation mark.

                        Yes, I know it's ridiculous.

Incidentally, I also had the same problem with Yaroslavl. First time up it appeared with an apostrophe at the end which I removed. After that every city wanted to be called Yaroslavl'. Very odd.

Was there another American civ? There can be two in one game, since the USA has 2 leaders.

EDIT: it was a captured barbarian city. Some of them are named after American Indian tribes.
