Good post !! I'm playing Elizabeth on Prince level and just happen to be at this point. This is what I have:

    - 6 cities: sizes 5, 5, 5, 1, 1, 1. This is a land grab game after I found that I was at the southern end of a continent, with Washing not too far north so I had to send my 2nd and 4th settlers into the jungle with good resources in between and those are still both size 1 cities.
    - 6 workers, 4 archers, and 11 warriors.
    - completed buildings: Stonehenge, 2 libraries, 1 barracks, Academy. Most buildings are built by tree-chopping since before I got Alphabet, my workers only had Mining, Agriculture, and Animal Husbandry.
    - Failed to get Oracle.
    - Building Partheon, Ganery, Worker, library, 2 archers.
    - Techs researched: Alphabet and then traded for almost all lower level techs without trading away Alphabet. Researching Code of Laws but already got beaten by the Molgol for being the first !! The AIs already have Code of Laws, Monarchy. Mathematics, and Ironwork. They all want to trade Ironwork for Alphabet but I'd rather live in a jungle without Ironwork than trading it away. It's a tough game on the tech side since my capital started at a location with poor gpld access so the Financial trait has been pretty much useless so far.

BTW, I've been wondering how the AIs in my game managed to get these techs so fast without trading among themselves. Compared to what you recorded, they seem to be much more advanced while not missing any lower level techs so I can trade with them for Ironwork.
The Prince level is a little higher but not by much.

I'm posting from work so I can't doublecheck, but melee units do upgrade to gunpowder units. However, IIRC, they don't upgrade to musketmen; you have to get to either grenadiers or riflemen and upgrade them to one of those.
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

yeah I usually upgrade to grenadiers/machine gunners. And later sam infantry.

If the sniper fails, he must move instantly, as he's -25% everything (at least), & can't take another shot until out of visual contact with enemy (or enemy's allies, natch) until he's bedded down again (ie at least 1 turn with no visual contact, else he's spotted & chased)

Very expensive unit to build, start at longbowman (although some civs may be able to do this earlier). Movement: 1 (fixed); class.. archery; promotions.. well, I'll leave it for you to decide..
You know, I vaguely recall there being a sniper unit in one of these games--was it a previous Civ game actually?

If I'm not mistaken, the unit couldn't outright kill another unit but could cause something like 75% damage without risk via a normal "attacker vs. defender" combat occuring.

Something like that might be appropriate, given a fairly high unit cost at least. The fact that it couldn't kill another unit on its own would help to balance it in play. Really though, maybe a sniper isn't all that great of a unit since the game, and current units, represent much larger divisions in whatever terms you like. Snipers may be a bit microscopic, if you catch my drift, but still sound like a potentially fun unit.

Couldn't the spy do something like that for money in Civ II? (It's been a long time, maybe I am wrong). Maybe they could just bribe units.

civ3: conquests had assassin units. They could choose which unit in a stack they could attack.

Is that what it was? Been a while since I've had Civ3 on the ole' hard drive--I vaguely remembered there being something like that! Thanks for the reminder!
