Well, I would try the new AI, it got a hell of a lot stronger than before when it comes to taking cities. Also, Soren has included a lot of defensive tweaks too, and the new combat system also adds into that. City defenses went up, for nations attacking with obsolete units. The AI gets cheap upgrades, so won't attack with obsoletes easily... the human might be forced to do so anyway.
I'm not saying it isn't possible anymore to see instances where the AI will stop one unit short, but it will be a lot rarer now. If they invade, they act like they mean it...
