PBEM autosend should work no matter what port is used for SMTP, as long as it does not require SSL. Instructions for this are in a few threads in the PBEM forum. If it is not working this way for anyone, it should be reported as a bug. SSL support is a feature planned to be added later, AFAIK.

yes, which is what I meant by "credentials", but I understand your point that it's a delivered feature, and SSL will be added later.

However, this is a bit iffy as it's pretty well known that most SMTP servers do require this.

      Thanks for the clarification.

        Congratulations on your first strawman.

Yes, clearly there is a significant number of people who have problems running the game. Equally clearly, this number is less than 50%, hence is not most.

Sorry if it seemed gruff, but I was browsing here while doing some programming homework, spotted the bug of passing the 'port 25' value through an && gate with the 'credentials' value, and felt a primal urge to up the S/N ratio around here...

Nevernind, this is not the case. I just didn't test the game long enough. I left one sitting around for several hours today and it eventually crashed, too.

There is still no patch and my games are still crashing. I am very annoyed.

As usual the first patch will address mostly graphical issues and major compatibility problems,I only hope the second patch will hit hard the very issues I read here.

I don't have Civ4 yet, so I am obligated to comment on horsies for my +1.

All the other major stock animals were domesticated long before the horse. Thousands of years for most of them, hundreds of years for camels and donkeys as mounts.

Primitive chariots were, in fact, pulled by donkeys.

I have a 2.6GHz machine running XP with an nvidia geforce 5200 card (128Mb). I have installed the latest driver (from 14 Nov 2005) and switched off anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering.

I have been playing (or rather trying to play) Civ IV for the last three days.

                      It:
                      1. Drops out to Windows about once a turn, erratically.
                      2. It freezes temporarily seval times a turn.
                      3. It freezes permanently (needing a reboot) about every 5 turns.
                      4. It takes as long as 10 seconds to move a unit one square after playing a while (on the rare occasions when it doesn't drop out to Windows), this is, I assume, a memory leak.

I do believe these are graphics issues (except perhaps a memory leak - Java forever!), rather than a cpu capacity problem, because the AI player moves are quite quick.

So I am giving up on Civ IV, at least until a patch becomes available.

For those with NVIDIA based graphics, it's been stated by many people that the latest sets of drivers have problems with Civ 4. Issues with video and sound card drivers have been stated as being addressed by the first patch.

The first patch will also include a LOT of gameplay changes, with the horses only showing up with animal husbandry being an example, not the only change.

That's why I rolled back to an ealier version (78.x I believe) and that didn't solve the problem.

Rolling back to an earlier version changed the problem from CTDing constantly to blue screening once every couple hours.

I started with the previous nVidia driver: 81.85, then upgraded to 81.94. The earlier version was worse.

                                Better or worse?
