I didn't get any cultural victories in civ3. Not one. But I never tried for them.

Woohoo!! I got my first cultural victory in civ4.

I had to drop down to warlord and play on normal speed. But I got it. 21 turns remaining. I did mess up once and accidently used a great artist for a golden age. . And I built a couple spies to keep tab on the persians. They were real close to building the space ship. I had a couple transports loaded up with modern armour and artillery to try to force him to change production if I need to. But I never had to use them. I probably wouldn't have had enough. I'd probably have to rush a couple more transports and load them up in order to empty his city and force him to change production. I'm not sure- I haven't tested the AI's willingness to change production yet.

      Nice one!

I didn't even know you could force the AI to change production. I was aware that spies can destroy production, but that becomes more and more expensive the closer the AI is to completion of said production.

As I said, I'm not sure I could. But I figure if I conquered the city- his production would be lost. Same effect. I just don't know if he will change production if he loses all his defenders. One of these days I'll test this out.

It seems to me that cultural victory is harder then Space Victory. Considering the total investment involved in a Space win vs a Cultural win. Everyone here has pointed out the need to start VERY early and be very focused on culture. Space simply requires normal technological and Economic Expantion the same things which lead to power in general. In multiplayer the spreading of multiple religions will be a significant drawback as your alowing everyone else to see into your cities (unless you manage to found all the religions in question which is unlikly). With more play easier ways to achive cultural victory may ultimatly reveal themselves but I would say that right now I definatly feed the bar is too high.

I have a question about the statue in the cultural victory video. Is that Ned Flanders??

I should check that. I could load up my save game (I always save thet turn before victory), but I don't want to duplicate my hall of fame scores. I wonder if there is a way to play all the videos in the game.

My point exactly. Even Conquest seems easy by comparison. Culture is definitely the hardest and most boring gameplay/winning strat.

I guess that just depends on whether one usually plays as a builder or a warmonger. Where I found cultural victory relatively straightforward and quite fun, conquest is something that I have difficulty with.
