If railroads gave no bonuses except movement, would you build them on every square?

I would really like if there was automation option called: SPAM roads or RR eveywere inside borders

Ultimately I rail every roaded tile, once the useful work is done. RR actually looks less ugly than roads, I think. I tend to road spam early in the game to minimise travelling distances, prepare for quicker lumber mills and border mobility. Once rails start going down the remaining roads don't look very pretty, but rails softens the impact on the eye.

I'd like to have only cities linked with RR but with that's sub-optimal, even in this game. The poster who refused to rail everywhere in Civ 3 was really screwing his civ over. Maybe he was trying to let the AI catch up.

btw, I didn't vote in the poll because neither option reflected my opinion. I don't love it when the map is filled with RR, but neither will I only connect cities.

I know roads are 1/3 but rails?

I miss infinite movement- being able to use enemy railways was stupid but your own it was cool to be able to defend anywhere in your country right away.
              Road are 1/2, not 1/3

Roads are only 1/2 until (I believe) engineering, then they become 1/3

I road/railroad every tile because I find it too tedious to manually control my workers after the initial stages of the game so I just put them on auto.

The fact that they took out unlimited movement on RR actually increases the possibility of spamming IMO.

CIV3 - Unlimited RR movement means I can simply connect my cities with 1 line and be able to react to any threats immediately. With pollution, I would send my workers to clean it up, then RR that tile so I could send them there quicker the next time.

CIV4 - 1:10 ratio means that my troops would need to (possibly) go out of the way to reach destination quicker [shortest distance being a straight line and all] thus, I would need to create routes to and from each city to provide my troops with the quickest routes to react.

Of course, being pro-active would resolve all those problems, but let's not get technical.

If RR costed 1gp maintaince per 5 tiles...

You guys do realise that the workers are computer simulations and, as such, don't actually get bored, don't you?

Just thought I'd check. One too many "I do it so the workers won't get bored" comments.

Oh, and I haven't had a chance to play long enough to discover RR. Two or three bad starts, a community theatre performance and an HDD crash has kept me away. Got a new HDD and done with the theatre so now I just need to reinstall it and I'm back.

Really? But then why does my computer keeping asking me to play with it?
