If railroads gave no bonuses except movement, would you build them on every square?

I build rails most places, but not everywhere even now.

Build everywhere, so I can get defenders wherever they need to be fast.

Well, you have the workers, why not put them to work.

Oh right! Sorry forgot. Must get head out of Civ2.

Of course not, but as soon as a city is lost, all the other units can pour into it and past it due to the railroad spam. I've taken over 1/2 the world in 1 turn with modern armor this way in Civ3 many times.

It's hard to counteract, but intelligent placement of forests and bunkers, and leaving railroads out of certain squares, definately helps your defenses more than it hurts them. Railroading *every* square in your territory to "help with defenses" is stupid. It might work against an AI player, but it will get you killed against a halfway decent human player.

To be honest, I would rather like a normal looking railroad system (eg, connecting from one city to the next) instead of spamming it everywhere. The problem is, I just can't be bothered microing my workers at that point in the game, and since they are all on auto network or full auto, they start doing the railroad spam for me.

That's the the same issue I posted in my thread on it. I hope Firaxis will include a way to calm down the workers in a future patch.

I actually don't mind the rails-everywhere look. I don't know why, because I'd think I would...but there's just enough irregularity in the pattern that I don't mind it.

That being said, I only build them between cities and on mines/lumbermills until I get to the point of having workers with nothing to do.

On topic, I hate the tile improvement spam the AI does, as I stated in a thread I posted. The main reason is that it turns the map ugly.
Actually, they can ! there's a promotion that allows
the use of enemy roads (and, I guess, railroads)

Also, on topic, yeah, I put railroads everywhere for
the simple reason that there's always the danger
of a slip of the finger, be it with the numeric keypad
causing my Modern Armor to veer off the railroad
into a desert or jungle, or be it with the mouse as I'm
directing a stack somewhere and it goes off course.

This can be very frustrating and annoying if you
needed said units to prevent pillaging or a city
                      falling into ennemy hands...

I use to build RR to pollution problem areas in Civ3, then connect the largest military unit production cities with the war front

Only have built RR once in 4 games in Civ4, and that was on the largest map

I guess it is not needed, but the poor workers must do something. In my current game I have only 7 workers and they often stay lazy. I see the AI has tons of workers. No wonder they put windmills and cottages on every tile, no matter if they are needed or not.

What is the exact ratio of movement points for rails now?
I know roads are 1/3 but rails?

I miss infinite movement- being able to use enemy railways was stupid but your own it was cool to be able to defend anywhere in your country right away.

                              1/10

edit: Well, not really. There's a limit of 10 squares, no matter what the unit's base movement is.

                                I would spam.
                                For one simple reason.

To keep Workers from boredon when anything else is done.
I usually do same with roads everywere for similar reasons.

And who knows, maybe some of those rails would get handy?
