I kinda view it like chess, if its obvious I'll lose I retire.
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

An interesting thing to not is if you lose the game, it doesn't actually say you lost in the hall of fame. I lost via space race (I was trying to get the cultural victory). It says victory type space race, but it doesn't say if I won. It was the computer who actually won via space race. It's just I don't get the bonus score of a space ship victory, so my scores aren't as high as the games where I actually won. But I'm still in the HOF.

Although you can watch a replay of the game and see who it is that did win.

I finished my first full game of Civ4 last night and I was both at the bottom of the score list and destroyed by the Romans. It was a very good game, actually, I originally had five cities but the Persians (to my left) declared war and a few turns later my eastern neighbours, the Russians, declared war as well. Catherine razed a city and Cyrus demanded another city in return for peace. So I was down to three cities but at peace. Before I could bring a settler to refound the burned city, Catherine rushed in a settler of her own! Sneaky. Then I converted to their religion and we all became very buddy-buddy for the rest of the game. I built up my infrastructure again and things were looking nice and rosy until Rome declared war. He came around with many, many war elephants and I was wiped out by 1300 AD. I lost miserably but it was a very interesting game.

Try playing OCC on deity with raging barbarians. You're in for a serious smackdown... Usually by the barbarians.

The only times I've actually played a game to the ultimate doom of my civilization was in Civ 1. I let that happen to me several times.

For whatever reason, if I'd start having my ass kicked, I'd turn it into a struggle to see how long I could last.. so I could brag to my bro that I manage to survive against all the odds. A kind of stubborn "I'm not going down without a fight dammit!" ..

Strangely in Civ 2, and CTP I never finished a game if it looked like I was gonna loose.. I'd just abandon it and start a new one. Not sure if that is because I was older, or because the game play was different. I wasn't loosing my first civ 4 game, but I wasn't a clearly winning either, so I just started over.

I guess, I would stick around and see how long I could last against insurmountable odds, but it depends on whether I'm enjoying it or not.

Playing out defeats and playing out victories can be equally tedious when the outcome is set. Starting a new game is more fun at this point, but OTOH quitting at the first sign of trouble can mean missing out on fun too.

I too fondly remember the Civ 1 ' ALEXANDER WILL RETURN' outro, and unfondly remember the juvenile taunts in Civ 3.

No. I play long enough to know I am not going to win. That's enough. I have been caught by surprise on the AI winning in the space race, but that's not the same thing.

I was thinking about quitting my first noble level game. As I had a terrible island start, and thought there was no way I could win. Well I did end up gaining in score and winning that game. It was close though. Although such come backs are not likely in the higher levels I'd imagine. But not too difficult to pull off in the low to mid levels.
