And your alternative is...? Carry your desktop system around with you? The reason laptops exist is because people desire portability. Often with very good reasons. Perhaps you have none in your life, but I assure you, a lot of the rest of us do.

I'm looking to get one so I can do stuff on the computer and still be upstairs with the rest of the family.

They are insanely usefull. But I'm not going to try and play Doom3 on it.

        Maybe RTC3.

          • I once knew a woman so fine,
She traveled in a relative way,
She traveled so far as to reach another galaxy,
came back only to wait still slightly for another turn of Civ IV.

            • The silence from Firaxis remains deafening, and I don't know why. When Rise of Nations came out, some of us had problems. And Firaxis staff and programmers got up on the boards to help us out, even though most of the problems were caused by us, not them. Brian Reynolds himself got on to lend a helping hand. Big Huge Games will always shine because of just that alone.

              • This is how Firaxis always has done it. And I think they have been amazingly good at support and answering questions here after the game came out. BTW, you do know that Firaxis didn't have anything to do with RoN?

                • FORMER staff of Firaxis developed RoN.
Brian Reynolds, et. al. defected Firaxis to form Big Huge Games and developed RoN, a game without lasting value.

                    • Brian Reynolds is currently seeking asylum at Microsoft.

After defecting from Firaxis over the SMAC debacle, Brian Reynolds turned to Microsoft for help. Armed with trade secrets as well as the identities of Firaxian secret agents placed within many of Microsoft's gaming subsidiaries, Mr. Reynolds hoped that the Microsoft executives would protect him from reprisal.

"We were all quite surprised when Brian Reynolds showed up in our corporate office asking for asylum, "said Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft. "My first reaction was "Who's Brian Reynolds?"

Brian Reynolds had worked for several years at Firaxis under the tutelage of Dear Leader Sid Meier. Mr. Meier hoped to revitalize his successful "Civilization" project by repackaging it's last incarnation in a completely different. Mr. Reynolds was to lead this new project, simply called SMAC.

"My job was simple. I was to take all the aspects from the second run of the project and repaint it to make it appear that it was a completely new product," said Brian Reynolds in an interview with Connie Chung a few months before his defection. "The last two projects were enormous successes. However, Sid didn't think that anything was needed to improve on them. With their eventually decline, Sid wanted to create a third incarnation with the clear distinction that it be the same as the second at its core. This is where I disagreed."

While the tension grew between Mr. Meier and Mr. Reynolds, the public was made unaware of this. In fact, great efforts were made to conceal any dissention of ranks within Firaxis. When SMAC was completed and released upon the world, it was met with mixed responses which eventually escalated into a full scale revolution. Eventually it was leaked that SMAC was simply a repackage of the second project. Firaxis responded to this with extreme force, which only turned more people against. Eventually, Firaxis was forced to close it borders and deny audience with anyone regarding SMAC or the "Civilization" products. Desperate to improve its image, Firaxis sought to spin the problems into something more positive. The statement released by head propaganda officer, Jeff Briggs, attempted to justify the turmoil by claiming that it united people and gave them something extra to enjoy in addition to the SMAC project itself. This quickly backfired and the phrase "We're building a community" became a rally cry against Firaxis. It was at this time that Brian Reynolds became more vocal about the project and the problems it suffered.

"He's merely trying to cover his own ass," responded Sid Meier when questioned about Mr. Reynolds statements about the SMAC project. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Reynolds announced his defections on the floor of the Microsoft headquarters. Along with promises to assist in Microsoft projects, Mr. Reynolds has offered to reveal trade secrets of Firaxis as well as expose agents of Firaxis placed in high level positions at Microsoft and other developing companies. Sid Meier quickly responded that Mr. Reynolds was only again trying to distance himself from his failure on the SMAC project and that he was never privy to any secret information at Firaxis. He also denied that there are Firaxian agents placed in other companies, calling this a "foul and perverse" lie by Mr. Reynolds.

Currently there has been no official word by Microsoft regarding there position on Mr. Reynolds. There is heavy pressure to be on good terms with Firaxis as Microsoft has been considering whether to enter the turn based strategy game market itself. Until a decision has been made, Mr. Reynolds will remain in the offices of Microsoft for what he claims is his own safety.

I'd take most games over that AoE lookalike RoN anytime(I do not like AoE as you understand).
