  • Is it just me?

Whether one likes the game or not, the CIV3 bugs were worked out pretty quickly once detected (then some were reintroduced with conquests) and I fully expect that by the time my version sits in my hands that my ATI card will be compatible with the game and I wont have constant CTD.

From looking at the posts so far, I've been wondering though whether CIV4's first few days is a worse debacle than CIV3?

Maybe. But from what I've read, seems that the majority of problems are related to graphics. Civ3's problems were less on the graphical side - more to do with gameplay mechanics.

... and we can all be thankful for that. Driver related problems can usually be overcome but its almost impossible to turn a badly flawed game into a strategy gem with a patch or two.
To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions; both dispense with the necessity of reflection.

I meant aside from the gameplay issues of CIV3. I dont recall anyone on the first day that couldnt get the game to start while the bugs such as the fighters not working wasnt detected for quite a while (maybe a week or so).

My game hasnt arrived yet and I'm wondering if I should install it. If I open the package they may not take it back. If I send it back it'll cost me money. If the installation fails (I have an ATI 9800) I may either waste hours trying to get the game to work or worse yet waste hours and screw up my pc so that I have to do even more work to get back to square one.

Clearly this is a worse debacle than civ3.

this game is a bazillion times better!!!!

don't let some stupid bug that happened with some people (many people with ATI cards didn't have any problems at all) tarnish your experience...

get the game, get the fix, play it and enjoy...

                and buy nvidia next time!

Don't worry I have a Radeon 9800 pro and have played the game well for ages. You are about to start playing the greatest Civ game every relax. The bugs that are in it will be fixed and they aren't game stoppers for most people.

Ditto. Two comps, two ATI cards. Works well on both (although conciderably better on the newer X850 than the older 9600).

                        I'm glad you're enjoying it.

So, if I'm one of the people who has to spend 8 hours trying to install CIV IV only to end up rebuilding my pc do you think I can send take2 and firaxis a bill for my lost time (which would be considerably more that what I paid for the game)?

So what do you think is the difference between those with ATI cards that dont work and those that do? Clearly it's not just the ATI cards.

From the take2 site, it looks like I have to install new video drivers in the middle of the civ install.

Whats that saying? 'You pays your money, you takes your chances!' Or something along those lines.
I have spent a frustrating weekend trying to play Doom3 (whilst waiting for civ4 of course ) and spent most of the time having to reload my computer-because it couldn't even get past my opening screen (even though I have above the required specs). Now, do you see me *****in', belly-achin' and sending a bill off to Activision for my lost time? No, because I realise that hardware and software are funny critters, particularly where 3D comes into it. Instead, I simply sent a letter to Activision support-along with my specs-and am now patiently awaiting the solution to my problems. If I have a similar problem with Civ4, I will do the same with Firaxis/Take2.
Now, were the game to be simply crap and silly-THEN I might have major issues. However, in spite of 1 or 2 things which I am a little worried about (no Great Wall or ToE for instance) overall I think I am gonna LOVE this game-far more than Civ3: Conquests!!!!

                              Yours,
                              Aussie_Lurker.
