  • interesting thread on civfanatics

a thread over there on their civ 4 help forum titled "i just talked to civ4 customer support" or something like that said the following:

And it's all bad news. Basically, if you are getting the black terrain, it means that your video chipset is too old to run the game, and there is no solution planned for that. If you are seeing some of the terrain, while the rest is black, it means the same thing--your video chipset is too old, and you will not be able to play the game properly on that machine.

So, in conclusion, if you are having video problems with Civ4, they are there to stay because Firaxis made the game that way. There is no solution right now, and there is not one planned in the future. I am returning my own copy to the store tomorrow. Apparently, my one-and-a-half-year-old P4 2.4 laptop, which runs Doom 3 and HL2 flawlessly is not good enough to run the incredibly technologically advanced Civ4.

Oh, I find it so weird that a computer that can run Doom3 will have video problems with civ4

    my geforce4 mx440 runs doom 3 fine

That is no surprise. People who have black terrain have video cards that don't support T&L.

GeForce 4 MX 440 runs the game. We've had many beta testers with GeForce 4 MX cards.

Considering that a GeForce 4 MX 440 is basicly a GeForce 2 on steroids, and that it works fine with that chipset, you have to have a really outdated card for it not to work (as in black terrain).

          Just food for thought.

My computer has a GeForce MX 420, Civ4 worked just fine right out of the box.

It works on GeForce 2 cards, too, yes, although I think it's slow - that's why the "steroids" of the GF 4 are useful.

Basically, the only way you can have a non-supported chipset is if you have one of those horrible integrated graphics cards.

                I don't consider my card outdated...I have a 9600 Pro 256mb card and I can't get past the Direct3d render bug.

I've heard people with x850's not being able to get the game to run, or if they do it's with black terrain.

This is a buggy POS that they released and I advise everyone to take it back.

I could pull my Geforce 6200 and put the Geforce MX 100 (That's right 100) with 32 MB in and watch the pain....Then again, I'm having enough pain as it is.

the bad news for me is that i have the same notebook (IBM thinkpad X40) and there is no chance to replace that graphics card (and btw, it is only 1 year old!!!)

                      what can we do????

The game runs on a FX5200.

Sabre - those Intel "graphical chipsets" don't support T&L and can't run the game.
