Exactly. Even so, I tried what he suggested and still got the Renderer error.

Just taken a quick look (the net and regedit) and those registry keys seem to tell the system where to find the 3D aspect of DirectX. Unless I'm totally wide of the mark I'd be suprised if you could run any 3D games at the minute.

        I hope this helps someone

{EDIT} Just replaced the pound signs with the number 3 [what a twit!]
I do not live in London, I live in South London. South London is different, a warm melting pot where everyone can become a bona fide South Londoner by virtue of two things. One: living in South London, and two: having no aspiration to live in the Cotswolds.

Well, mind are timestamped correctly from yesterday (about 8 of them, not at home to count). But - I did notice that it the DirectX setup seemed to go really really quickly and I was very surprised it had accomplished anything.

Maybe it updated those first 8 and then stopped? No idea.

Since putting up my 2 dxdiag files we formated the first computer and reinstalled windows, Catalyst 5.1 and the most current sound driver. Nothing else is on this machine.

When installing Civ 4 it went though like it was updateing the Direct X files but after it rebooted there were no time stamps for today.

The game failed to render when we tried it.

            Next try...

I used a program called Direct X Eradcator to remove Direct X from the machine. This is where the regisgry errors came from.

I downloaded 9.0c from Microsoft and installed it clean. I opened the Civ 4 install disk and manually set the direct X to update. Again once it rebooted there were no file changes.

It appears to be random as to if it will update the files because on a pervious attempt I followed all the same steps including formatting and it updated the timestamp on the direct x files. This time is just will not do it.

The only difference between the dxdiag I posted for the first machine and the current one it reported is that the machine is now reporting the catalyst 5.1 for the video driver. All the rest of it is exactly the same.

The game is running beautifully on the second machine. Hubby just a bit miffed cause we can't get it to work on his atm. I really hope this all gets sorted out soon

                  got 8.18

8.18 is the version of the 3D driver.
6.14 is the version of the 2D driver.

When u see 6.14, doesnt mean you don't have the right driver. Get into the Display propreties, Advanced, under the ATI Options tab, you see Packaging Version 8.18....

These drivers are the ones from the ATI driver website.

Firaxis: I think you are doing a poor job. There is NOT hundreds of drivers. We have downloaded the latest one (2D 6.14/ 3D: 8.18) and for some it works for others it does not.

It simply does not make sense that downloading the latest official either 5.9 or 5.10 driver works for some and not the others.

Stop wasting our time with driver problem. ITS clearly YOUR software. PATCH IT

I have a Radeon X800 XL, which was getting the "renderer" error when I installed last night - I didn't check for problems on this site (or others), but used catalyst to update the drivers. Re-installed Direct X 9c and it seems to be working fine.

Good luck with everyone else's woes

I'm sorry it is happening ot other people, but glad it isn't just me that had problems (after I built this PC with my bare hands).

I followed the directions given on Take2's site, and now I don't get the render error anymore. However, I get the splash screen, then the loader. Once it gets to "init engine", the screen flickers a few times, then it goes back to my desktop as if I never attempted to launch the game.

I'm running Windows MCE SP2, Radeon 9550. All drivers & directx are up-to-date.

Oh, and I've tried the unPak utility as well. That's what actually got rid of the render error, but as I said, the game starts up, but before I get to any intro movie or main menu, I get booted back to my desktop.

                              GOT IT!

I just created a new user account in windows, and then launched the game. And for some reason, it worked! Not sure why, but it runs like a dream!
