If you got driver ati2dvag.dll Version 6.14.0010.6575 then you got the right one.
If you take a look at what Version the driver for your Radeon-Card has, you will find it's version 8.18 as needet.
    6.14 is the File-Version 8.18 the Driver-Version.

I also have that particular d3d file.

There are 2 driver numbers for the "same" drivers. If you look under Options, Details under Advanced Display Settings, there is:

      2D Version 6.14.10.6575
      Display Driver Version 8.18-050914a1-027256C-ATI

I have also updated to 5.10 and I do have the dx file in question, as well as updated dx files with today's timestamp. I'm using a Radeon x700 pro and would be happy to post anything needed.

Yeah, got the file. Yeah, installed the new driver. Yeah, it's 6.14.0010.6575.

and btw, timekillr, that is not today's timestamp. It's 05, or May 26th. The day's right, just off by a few months.

If it's any consolation, my file "d3dx9_26.dll" is also stamped for May 26th.

Got an X800 Pro vid card, if that helps (I know it's also in my diag.

Same issue. Didn't initialize with old drivers, and I have the 5-10 drivers for a 9600, fresh off the Ati website. I installed that and have the same error. Here's my init log:

In the course of tinkering around to try and get this to work I installed (from an old install file) Directx 9.0b, hoping that would convince the installer on the Civ4 cd to overwrite some files it wasn't overwriting before. Yet, while the 'b' installer certainly acted like it was overwriting a large number of .dll files, the 'c' installer on the CD sits on "copying files..." for about 2 seconds and then claims it's done. Afterwards (even after a restart), dxdiag still thinks I'm running directx 9.0b.

I've got the 5.10 ATI drivers installed, and have the same versions as in the screenshot above. I would bet serious money that if that directx 9.0c installer would actually overwrite my old directx files, things would be working smoothly.

dxdiag file is attached. Incidentally my card is a 9600.

                          Good luck.

edit: to include my init.log output:

just a recap of what i said in the other thread, in case it might help diagnose the problem:

                            1. i have a 9600xt and was running dx 9.0c. i let the disc update dx and tried running. no go
                            2. i updated my driver to 5.10 and tried updating dx off the disc manually. no go (i've checked all the version numbers etc. it's all the right stuff)
                            3. i used a tool to revert my dx back to 8.1 and tried running civ4. it runs fine. i only played around with it for a few minutes so i dunno how long it'll continue working but i haven't had any problems yet
                            4. i tried updating from 8.1 to 9.0c off the civ4 disc. didn't work. it did update my system to 9.0c as reported in dxdiag, but civ4 fails to run with the renderer error

so, i've tried basically all of the solutions offered in the various forums. i always check versions/dates/dxdiag etc to make sure everything is as it should be. and the only thing so far to get it running is to revert back to dx 8.1. so i'll be sticking with that until some kind of official solution is presented

Getting the same failed to initialize render error as everyone else -- radeon x700 here.

Yes, I have installed directx from the civ4 cd. Yes, I have cleared my old ati drivers (via catuninstaller) and am now running 5.10. Yes, d3dx9_26.dll is present in my system32 folder.
