  • Checking XML?

I hope this is a simple problem.

I installed the game just fine, it asked if i wanted to install the latest the driverx 9.3 thing and i clicked yes and installed it. When I press on the shortcut, the startmenu button, or the auto-startup screen's play button, it shows the game loading screen. then it gotes the the screen where a bar is loading. about 1/5 of the way, it says "Checking XML" and then the screen exits and nothing happens.

Does anyone know what the problem is? I went SRTest.com and I passed the minimum requirement test. I passed everything in the recommended setting except for my video card which is slightly weaker than what they recommend

I have the same exact issue...

Anyone know what this is about yet?

I have the exact same problem... I tried to reinstall my video drivers and that didnt help. The take 2 support line won't answer their phones, they just tell you to call back in 24 hours... Grrrrr.

I'm having problems as well...As an idea I went to look at the xml files to seee if they were opening corectly. I did notice when I was going through the different xml files in the civ4 directory that every time I opened one I recieved a popup from windows security saying it had blocked something. I don't know if this is the problem, I cannot figure out how to shut down the windows security blocker.
I'm not even supposed to be HERE today!!!

This problem must be machine specific...I was able to install Civ4 on my other (older and crappier) machine, but not my Alienware Laptop(!?!) WTF? I will look to see what is different, if anything between the two...

You should have a Logs folder under My Games, and it will have a file called xml.txt... could you post that if you are having problem with xml?
            - What's that?
            - It's a cannon fuse.
            - What's it for?
            - It's for my cannon.

I too am having this problem.

as for Soren's request, when I checked my Logs folder in My Games, I don't have anything in there, much less xml.txt. Anyone else missing this file?

I noticed when I was having this error there were no files at all in the My Games folder created by the installation.

Even the XML folder itself had nothing. I recently returned my game to the store for a refund, I will pick it up if a fix is located for the XML problems.

Painful for me to have returned it too

I have a bunch of folders in my games/civ 4, but nothing is in them except civilizationIV.ini.bak and CivilizationIV config settings.

we think this might be caused by you not having msxml3.dll on your system. Most people have it b/c they have IE6 installed... is that the case for any of you? (that it is not installed?)

                      Soren,

No, I don't have IE 6, I use Firefox. I am downloading it right now and will let you know if that fixes things.

Edit: Apparantly I do have IE 6, so I'm back to square one: the game still doesn't work.

I'm experiencing the problem, and I have the msxml3.dll file in my c:\windows\system32 folder. The file has a size of 1,236,480 bytes, has a description of MSXML 3.0 SP 5, and a file version of 8.50.2162.0.

Note also that if I turn on the logging in the configuration, I get the following text in init.log:

                        [11473.781] DBG: FILE Cat Init
[11473.937] DBG: NOT Using XML cache, failed to find crc.dat file
                        [11473.937] DBG: Game Init
                        [11473.937] DBG: Multiplayer Init

None of the other log files contain any text at all.

Actually I have three instances of msxml3.dll on my computer.

One in my windows\system32 (last modified 8/4/2004)
                          Another in windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 (same)
and the final in my NAV\Suport\MSRedist\MSRedist (7/30/2001)
