      If this helps...

I was sniffing around and found that I have installed MSXML parser 4 (in add/remove programs). However I did a search for msxml3.dll, and I have it. I got curious and searched for MSXML parser 4 on the web, and I got this on microsoft's site :
      Overview
MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2) is a complete replacement of MSXML 4.0 and MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1). MSXML 4.0 SP2 provides a number of security and bug fixes. For more information about MSXML 4.0 SP2 see the release notes.

MSXML 4.0 SP2 does not replace MSXML 3.0 because some obsolete and non-conformant features are no longer supported. You may run MSXML 4.0 and MSXML 3.0 and earlier versions concurrently.

      Hopefully it will help.

I fixed it (at least for me)

Try to login with a different user account. If you don't have another one, create one. If you don't login, someone here with more patience than I have will surely explain how to create user accounts.

It worked for me. I'm going to check the game out. Good luck.

Yeah I am getting the same thing. Installed the game fine, but when I start it up the progress bar is at ~20% and it says checking XML then quits to desktop.

When I set the configuration file to enable log=1 I get three files: xml(blank 0k) resmgr(blank 0k) and init.

          init file contains:
          [1242.531] DBG: FILE Cat Init
[1243.781] DBG: NOT Using XML cache, failed to find crc.dat file
          [1243.781] DBG: Game Init
          [1243.781] DBG: Multiplayer Init

I then downloaded the newest drivers from Nvidia, 81.85. No change. Search of my computer reveals no crc.dat file exists, hmmmm.

          Specs:
          P4 2.2 Ghz
          1 Gig RAM
          GeForce 6800
          1024x768(32bit) 60Hz

I also have msxml3.dll in my C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. I also have IE6 although I have no idea wtf IE6 has to do with Civ4.

My comp has worked fine on several newer games, BF2, GuildWars, Dungeon Siege 2, etc.

I guess I'll try reinstalling but if that doesn't work I am out of ideas.

            I'm having the same problem.

            P4 1.8GHz,
            504MB Ram,
            GeForce 5500

I have msxml3.dll in my folder, and I have IE6.

I was able to get through on the support hotline, they suggested first to download drivers from Nvidia, then to uninstall and reinstall the game. Nothing worked, so the guy said to call back tomorrow: they are working on the problem. Hopefully they'll get it figured out.

              Try this:

Disable any virus scanners (Norton, Etc.) and reinstall.

Yeah I tried that, still same error. To be honest sometimes I don't close all my programs when I install stuff but both times when I installed Civ4 I had McAfee off and nothing else running in the background.

It really doesn't look like a user issue, looks like a problem with the game.

Hmm... a friend of mine suggested an interesting possibility. I'm at work so I can't try it out.

Try installing/upgrading .NET. That package does pull in a number of other system dlls, potentially even a different/upgraded xml handling system.

Ok I did find a solution to this. Its a bit tricky and mostof you haveprobably found it by now.

Basically after the install I created another account in xp. As long as I use the second account the game runs fine. Well it runs as fine as I could expect with my system. I am thinking there is a way to patch this as it seems its a program recognition thing. I think there is a program on my main account that won't allow this to initialize right.

The only thing I can say is that the *.bik movies has the sound cutting in and out, and that XML sometimes is cached and sometimes it is not!

And it is listed when starting up the game!
There are other problems in the game as well, as a slow-down, getting laggy, and probably is a memory leak.

Pirates! plays fine and has the same kind of setup on the install, and Civ IV plays, but then sometimes like I said the XML part when starting is sometimes Cached, and sometimes it is not!

I keep all the files in the Documents and Settings/folder which just now I know exists and CRC.dat is there along with other *.dat files!

Err... in case you haven't heard, an official answer was found on this. It's a problem with sound initialization, and upgrading sound card drivers is likely to make the problem go away.

Indeed. Although creating a second user is a fantastic way to start from a clean slate and avoid a bunch of problems created by conflicts. The sound init happens right after the xml init, and thus ...

Although in my case, the "clean slate" didn't work because I'd always installed everything for all users. So, "clean slate" wasn't so clean after all.

I had that happen during the beta, after installing the "latest" drivers from windowsupdate.com, so I went back and reinstalled the last good drivers from the manufacture and never had the problem again.
