It would be interesting to know if this problem popped up for the GTA releases...

EDIT: It seems I am getting confused between Take2 interactive and 2K games. I guess 2K is a subsiduary of Take2 and probably had no contact with the GTA series at all...

yes, this worked for me too. of course if you ignore read errors, those files will be corrupted. i made an image with a different proggy, then mounted with daemon tools. dang, it installs fast from disc image...

of course, this option is not available to any but the most hardcore geeks. also, in los angeles, every store is completely sold out so exchanging is not an option.

      -dl

PS i must admit, once its installed, the game seems awesome

I agree, it is only a temporary fix. I am sure that at some point those corrupted files will come back to bite me in the butt. Just need to get MY fix until I can exchange this thing.

PS - Take2, fire your QA guys or your repro guys - whichever group screwed up

The 2K Games official CivIV site's support section has a solution for corrupted installation files. Not sure if this applies to everyone who posted here, but perhaps it's useful to someone.

Nope not a fix for corrupt files, only an exchange will solve that. But thanks anyway, I just have to wait and wait for EB to being in more product. Best preorder I ever had.

I bought two civ4 copies and installed them on two different computers. Both of them showed a "data3" data file when I inserted disc 2lay disc. It has missing or wrong rcr files, i heard about other people's disc's being scratched, so i checked the discs and both discs has some scratching and marks on the inside of the disc. Im really angry and hope this doesn't reflect firaxis's gaming ability.

To be fair, this is definitely a Take2 problem, not a Firaxis problem. Not that it makes it much better.

Like I posted above, if you have a general knowledge of computers, you may be able to get a working copy of your game going. See my post about images above.

On a related note: can any of you guys open these *.CAB files using regular tools (Windows cab-viewer of WinZip) -- I cannot and am beginning to wonder if my problem (black terrain) is related to corrupt files...

Add me to the list of people have CRC problems. About 9 files return CRC errors, before I finally get the best error message I have ever seen:
                    ***
                    Feature Transfer Error
                    Feature: DefaultFeature
                    Component:
                    File:
                    Error: Catastrophic failure

                    ****

                    Yeah. It actually says catastrophic.

Same problem as in first post above. When I try to install the game, the first CD stalls about 80% of the way through the process and returns message:

                      Feature Transfer Error
                      Feature: Default Feature
                      Component: Civ4 Component
                      D:\data2.cab
                      Data error (cycle redundancy error)

I tried the the Nero/Daemon work-arround suggested by dsb3232, but it did not work for me. My disc may be too far gone. Now the CD does not even load; it just hangs after I put it in the drive. I notice that there is a small scratch/defect in the plastic on the back of the CD, close to the edge (about 1cm long by 3mm wide). I bought my copy from Amazon.com, so I cannot easily return it. I tried e-mailing Take2games for help, but there is no response after two days (its phone lines are so backed up that you are dropped off hold after five minutes). Now I am starting the long process of returning it by mail. I think I may not get a replacement, until I can find it in the store where it is easier to return.

Similar problem here. 1st disc seems to install fine. 2nd disc gets 99% done then the cyclic redundancy check error for data3.cab

And thus, this problem does not even let you copy the cab. file directly into your hard drive. My computer is brand new. In fact, I assembled it just this weekend.

Therefore, yes, indeed. The problem is with the CD.

So. What can be done to fix this?

Well, this is what a CRC means:

There are plenty of technical resources on the Web that discuss cyclic redundancy checks (CRCs). Most times you won’t need to worry about this technobabble. That is, until one it day it suddenly appears and you think – what the hell does that mean? In simple terms, a CRC is bit of mathematics used to […]

My solution was to return the box with the bad CD and get another. Works fine now.

Incidentally, the bad CD I had was from the "Special Edition" in which they jammed the CD tightly into a cardstock sleave. I wonder if that packaging had anything to to with the scratch on the back. The normal edition CD comes in a soft envelope, and I found no scratches on that one.

Upon examination of that 2nd disc I saw that it had a small bit of stuff dotted on the outside edge (almost like glue). I returned it to place of purchase, checked the new discs right there at the customer service counter before I even left and they looked fine. At home they loaded up just fine and after about 3 hrs of play I had no noticable problems with the game play either.
