  • error: data error ?

this is what i am getting when i try to load it....

    civ4 component
    d:data2.cab
error: data error (cyclic redundancy check)

    whats wrong?

  • #2
I'm not certain how cyclic redundancy check works, but once I couldn't get a file to open, nor move it, and everytime I tried I got a cyclic redundancy check error. Turned out the data had become corrupt because my hard drive was full of bad sectors.

I'm not saying that this is necessarily your problem, but it might be.

You can get the link for the disk diagnostic tool for your particular hard drive from:

Every user should have UBCD in their bag of tricks! ~ Midknyte UBCD UBCD5 beta download Paragon Drive Backup Express - It's FREE! Slipstreaming AutoStreamer Guide and Download NLite

(scroll down to "hard drive diagnostics")

I hope this is NOT your problem, and if it isn't the problem, then I apologize for alarming you uselessly.

I have the same problem, but in data3.cab. While the information in the above post may be correct in some cases, I think the problem is that the data on the CDs is failing the CRC check. That means the data on the disk is likely corrupt. Check the CD for scratches. I'm not sure if there will be a solution to this beyond exchanging the game at your retailer, which is really annoying.

I know this is a factor for at least one other poster at CFC too.

I have the same problem. Part of the CD seems to be melted on the label side and cracked on the data side (like hundreds of very small cracks in 1/2 inch area. I'm going back to the store for a replacement.

Well, this problem certainly is disappointing! I'll have to check my copy before I leave the store, once I get my hands on it.

Although, defective CDs are easier to deal with than a defective HDD... So I guess that's a positive outcome.

Got a replacement box (checked the CDs before I left the parking lot) and it installed fine. Yeah, it will be a good idea to check the CDs before getting too far away from the store, just to save you some trouble in case one is faulty. The fault on mine was pretty obvious when I looked at.

Generally means a bad CD disc.

The data that was read from a section did not match the checksum.
We're sorry, the voices in my head are not available at this time. Please try back again soon.

I got the CRC error late in data cab on 2nd disc. How extremely extremely disappointing.

Is this what I have to look forward to in the game as well? Nice quality assurance guys. I simply do NOT believe that a production error of THIS magnitude passed specs. They obviously shipped it knowing a high percentage is faulty.

Reminds me of fightclub - remember the formula? If X times Y times Z is less than the cost of a recall, they don't do one...

Nice one! Happy gaming! Only one more day of waiting left for me. Yay!

I'm assuming the responsibility for this kind of defectiveness lies on Take2's shoulders and shouldn't be allowed to tarnish Firaxis' image...

OK I bought two copies, one to pass to a freind.]

Neither copy will load on 2 separate computers.

                      Feature transfer error:

                      Feature: default Feature

                      File D:\data3cab

                      error: data error....cyclic redundancy check

both discs are mint shape. no sign of dirt, glue, damage.

One disc set jams 80% thru install during the medieval soundtrack.

The second set jams 99.8% thru install during the Opening slideshow. Install aborts.

Ditto for me, except only one copy, data3cab error. 2K must have some very high Quality control standards.

                          M@rs -

I had a similar problem - to get my fix, I found a temporary workaround. I used Nero to make an image of the second disk (the one which had errors for me) and made sure to check "ignore read errors". After I had the image, I mounted it using Daemon tools and then attempted the install again. I used the first disk as usual, then when it asked for the second disk, I directed it to the mounted image. This let me ignore the error (skipping over the corrupted files). I haven't had any problems playing since, although I know some files are missing and may cause problems later.

At least I still have Civ 4 to keep me warm while I wait for a replacement!

My install will get all the way to the end and then give me that same error. No files are copied to the program file directory. I've tried installing on on both my DVD dirves with the same issue. I've got an emial into Take 2 tech support, and will post their response if we're not old and grey before it comes.

                            In short, this sucks.

I sent my email yesterday afternoon not even a auto response so far. They also have wonderful customer relations.
