The civic system. I'm happy that they gave the civic options powerfull effects and that they appear to be more balanced then the civ3 governments. Let's hope that it turn's out like it sounds.

Like Aussie-lurker I have several good points, so in no particular order:
1. Religion
2. Units with distinctive advantages (eg. +100% vs mounted etc) making combat more complex
3. Promotions making combat more complex
4. Music and Voice-over! Great! Just listen to the Civ 4site intro music...
5. Personalities with great leaderheads (I hope you "feel" them!!)
6. World map!!!
7. Hopefully interesting/strong A.I.
8. A game where the builder has a chance (but I hope those conquer-strats aren't too hard for the computer opps to execute against a strong builder as I like good opposition)
....And doubtless tons more... it's a package and it still goes under the label "seems too good to be true" for me.
The bad parts with Civ 4:
1. I wish I knew nothing from the info in here and just got the game and "discovered" it instead...man.. It's like watching trailers for films... they get you excited but spoil a whole whole lot of the fun.
2. Spying: Solver says it's a weak part. I figure it must be better than Civ 3 though. Hoping for invisible CTP-like spies at least. This is likely: Firaxis was afraid to implement invisible units full force afraid of people with bad experiences with CTP
3. It will destroy my constructive free time with all certainty...uff

And I eagerly await Civ5 in about 6 years time.
I will also stop reading these forums in 5 years time - so as not to have my hopes for Civ5 spoilt by all the previews.
In the meantime I will spend every last penny building either HAL or Deep Thought to handle the awesome AI that will vapourise human players in their seats if their civilization gets beaten.
Now thats what I call a hotseat game."What if somebody gave a war and nobody came?" Allen Ginsberg

The MODDING! You see as a SMAC fan the Civ genre is really just catching up to SMAC in most ways, such as civics and the tech voiceovers and such. The main enhancements over SMAC seem to be the 3D map, the pop, growth&happy models and AI's with a clue (but the SMAC AI's were FUN to play against/with and had great character unlike civ3 AI's). But these aren't enough to get terribly excited about.
It's the modding that is exciting, because SMAC was barely moddable.

My biggest feature will be the 2cds to play the game!"What do you think Abraham Lincoln would be doing if he were alive today? (1) Writing his memoirs of the Civil War. (2) Advising the President. (3) Desperately clawing at the inside of his coffin."
