i voted 1, but my ego probably hopes more for 2 or 3

in civ3 i managed to beat deity only very very seldom, mainly because i was not willing to go for the great library slingshot exploit.

i hope the AI can be a challenge for every player, even true strategy-gods like aeson et al. this should be without so called "AI-cheating", such as making deals easier between AI or production boni, etc. of course this is not purely possible because the computer can only outperform is in tactical thinking due to calculation power (so no unnecessary attacks, etc), while the strategic thinking is all just as good as the developers have implemented it (its value system)

        I voted 4!

I don't want my games to be work, I'm playing my games to ESCAPE from hard work. It's called "relaxing". I want to be able to put in 5 hours and completely dominate the board in one fashion or another. Like building a massive Colonial Empire or a Technological Marvel or Military Superpower.

Basically It comes down to: Yes. I want to win my game and I don't want some uppity AI trying to make me look like a fool.

But I do like when they have different agendas and such. Variety is the spice of life.

I voted 1, though i'd like the AI to just be difficult because of good coding, not because of uber bonuses. The uber bonuses stuff is why i've never really played Diety in Civ3, only Monarch-Emperor games really. I absolutely love it when the AI in a game beats me. Thats also why I was never one of those Civ2 is better then Civ3 people because the AI in Civ2 was a joke. SMAC wasn't quite as bad, but only because it had alot more theme and variety then Civ2 that helped offset the bad AI.

Thinking about it the wording of the poll should be slightly different.

It should say on the average difficulty level how important is a strong AI.

This would equate to Regent in civ3. (Or maybe Monarch.)

Because above that level the AI bonuses (cheats) start to kick in.

While I know we'll never get some advanced neural netty super adaptable AI, I want an AI that puts up a good challenge without any blatant cheating. Beyond just making things difficult for the player I want an AI that knows how to win the game themselves.

                Same like Lord Gek,
an AI which is great without cheating (especially in seeing all resources from the start on [like it was AFAIK in Civ III], trading tech to other AIs for nil and getting huge production bonuses) might be fine.

yeah, the AI just is not half as treacherous and backstabbing as some human players

                          PBEM?! ::splutter::

Brother, let me show you what Active MP can be.

And Sabre... I'd be careful making assumptions about the AI.

even the most vicious AI cannot be as nasty and lying as some players in the Civ3-Conquests Democracy Game

Some of us really do intend to try active MP, F-P but we may not always have time for it hence we will continue to play SP.

And Apoly remain a predominantly SP site. We are having quite a debate right now on how soon we should try a multi team Demo game and the majority of folks want to wait till we finish 4 or 5 or 6 SP Demo games before we move forward!

Keep preaching MP, but its going to be a tough sell here, and whats the matter with CIV being a great game for all flavors of game playing

The first demogame should be multi-team. See who learns as they go along, rather than who reads the best strategy articles.
