I want an AI that every once in a while will make me stop and say "Gee, that was a great move" ... I've only really seen that in a chess game when I understood how important and well thought out the move a few turns back was.

I'd love for an AI that could defeat me with less units than I have. The only game I've seen that in was Rome Total War where I got out flanked (baited into a chase) and they took the high ground.

So I voted for the killer AI.

I want an AI that can smack me down. . . I expect an AI that still has cheating galleys. . .

          1 Killer AI.

For the "I don't want to lose" people they can play on the lower settings.

You know, I used to dream of killer AI in a TB game....and then I played GalCiv. This game had, IMO, killer AI, and I loved it....until it burned me out.

My real job is already tough enough on my old gray cells....trying to outfox a tough game during the night hours is just over the top for me.

Option 2 is more my speed.

What I really want is an AI that is unpredictable, and still quite good. Like the ability to choose from a bunch of proven (and less proven) strategies and also shift strategy so it can never quite be known what it's up to.

It would also be good if there are some generous AI's (like in SMAC) rather than all the AI's treating the player like scum, and some quirky AI's that are like "I'm going to nuke you just for fun! Hah!". I want cowardly AI's that cower in fear of my armies and fold before i even hurt them, and other AI's that fight to the bitter end. I want bipolar AI's that cower in fear until I hurt them, then go ballistic, refusing to ever make peace.

I rank fun and variety as more important than hardness, I want my games to be memorable.

                  AI levels

I want a game where the AI is the key to winning or losing. Too many games use modifiers as the way to make the AI difficult or easy. For example, if a key difference in difficulty levels is how long it takes for a city to produce something, and computer "players" get advantages that the player doesn't have, that's poor. For example, from 10 tiles away, a computer player shouldn't know(without spys) if a city has no units defending it. Basically, a computer "player" shouldn't be able to cheat.

It sounds like many of these things will be addressed in Civ 4, so it will be interesting to see how good the computer players are at playing.

You know, I once heard this really cool civ3 story about 2 years ago. A player was up against China (sharing a continent and at war). The human player had fortified ALL of his cities along their common border with LOTS of units, and was pressing home the advantage on that front. Then he noticed a group of chinese ships disappearing into the 'fog of war'. Around 8 turns later, a whole bunch of Chinese units turned up at this guys lightly defended rear, and took around 4-5 of his cities. Turns out the Chinese had signed a RoP agreement with the nation at the player's rear-and used that to bring the force it had transported by sea. Now, though I have not heard many such stories from civ3, this one indicated the kind of AI I want to play against-one which will do something TOTALLY unexpected on a fairly regular basis. The other thing I want from my AI, though, is PERSONALITY. I want an AI which is pursuing agendas and ideologies and which-though occasionally unpredictable in diplomatic terms-will mostly do things which it considers to be in its best interests.

So, to sum up, I would say that I want a cunning AI that also has a genuine sense of personality.

                    Yours,

I take no pride in defeating an idiot. I don't play multiplayer, so AI is very important to me. The tougher the better. However, I detest AI cheats, which are just lazy programming or wrong priorities on the part of developers.

They simply enjoy the game for the game's sake and don't make it a goal to figure out how to beat the AI on the hardest levels, etc.

That'd be like me . Just give me something fun, but I don't to win all the time. Make it close. I usually played on King in Civ2 and never played Deity. I found King to be a proper balance.
