  • Would you enjoy Civ less if your home civ was not in?

@Volstag (from the Israel thread): And finally, I just don't understand why some people are so obsessed with inclusion/exclusion of certain countries. I feel that some people base the relative worth of their country on whether it appears in a silly game, or not -- which is weird.
Personally I would not care if france or germany (my home countries) were not included in the game. I base my selection of civs entirely on the fun I would have to play them/against them. So I second Volstag's perplexity at why people are so obsessed with that.

In all the missing civ threads, many good arguments for and against are always given for Civ X, but does the lack of civ X really affect how you play the game...

So... would you enjoy civ less if your home civ was not in?

I'm from Switzerland so i can't really answer the question because we will probably never be in the game. At least in Conquest there was the Swiss Mercenary as a special unit of the Dutch i think.

For me the nationality DOES make a difference. I wouldn't like playing civs with fantasy names. Playing the Persians vs. playing the Germans feels quite different IMHO.

My home civilisation is not in the game and I don't care. I usually play England though (the next best thing). If England wasn't in then I would play some other European country or Egypt or Babylon.

That said I really don't want to play civs with fantasy names either.

Everyone knows Australia is the centre of the civilised world but they are not in the game. Perhaps I should start a thread?

I agree. Civs with fantasy names would make a completely different game. I am not trying to bring down the importance of real, existing Civs (or that have existed at some point in our history), but given the restricted amount of Civ slots I wouldn't mind if even one of the bigger ones like germany or france were replaced by another interesting Civ like Israel.

It would be a strange choice, but it would not keep me from enjoying the game just the same.

          Yay! Let the flamefest begin

Honestly though, that's one Civ I would definitely enjoy playing.

I do enjoy having "real" Civs to play with but I usually find I play Civs based on their characteristics (usually the Babs) rather than with any lingering sense of patriotism. So I would have to answer that I wouldn't mind if my own Civ was absent (easy for me to say - I'm English and it is probably unlikely that the designers would forget to include England).

I do not live in London, I live in South London. South London is different, a warm melting pot where everyone can become a bona fide South Londoner by virtue of two things. One: living in South London, and two: having no aspiration to live in the Cotswolds.

I was wondering if I could make a mod for Australia. Specialists could be: hoons, yahoos, drunken yobboes, policemen (to control the hoons, yahoos & yobboes).

The UU could be the wowser which destroys all recreational facilities and cuts off luxuries and generally pisses everyone off. Get it out of your territory real fast! (BTW Wowser is an acronym for "we only want to stop every recreation", I haven't heard anyone use this word for years. A very perjorative term, makes a killjoy look like a barrel of laughs).

The religion: alcoholism. Bars, pubs and breweries replace cultural and religious structures.

Racetracks, two-up schools, football field and casino replace trade structures.

Unique technology allows the luxuries of Bundaberg Rum, scotch whisky and whores.

Heheh, very true too... In Civ3 there were a lot of Civs I really liked but that did not have the characteristics I wanted (usually industrious + scientific|religious) - I used the editor quite a lot

While you're at it, why don't you add the Civs that somethingawful mentioned in their Civ4 preview? They would fit right in.

... I would LOVE to see what the polka band vs wowser fights would look like

No it does not matter to me at all, even when the Vikings came in Civ 2 I dit not feel any special need to play them more than anyone else. But another factor that actually does matter a little to me is that some civs feel like they "must" be available because I have such fond memories of them from earlier version.

Like the Zulu, Egyptians, Chinese, Aztec, Amercians etc.

If the candy were shaped like a burning cross or a black man made of regular chocolate being dragged behind a truck made of white chocolate I could understand the outrage and would share it. - Drosedars

I wouldn't mind particularly- given that England stands in for the British Empire it's pretty much a moot point anyway.

I've played as every Civ anyway, and modified them and so forth, so it's not too big a deal.

I still have very fond memories of the outraged and defeated leaderheads from Civ I and the lovely map of world history....

rather less fond memories of people like Wallace being 'English' great leaders.

Oh, I would definitely. As Gustavus Adolphus or Karl XII- Swedish 17th and early 18th Century history was a favourite part of my school studies.

With Oxenstierna you would get a sound administrator and with Adolphus a military genius- that would be a powerful combination for Civilization games.

Now that you mention it, I never gave that much thought. You mean William Wallace, right? His full title was Sir William Wallace of Elerslie if I remember correctly, and he was a 100% scot that fought against the ruling king Edward Plantagenet of england. I guess the choice *was* a little awkward...

Then again, he didn't live that far off england

Rather like having the Duke of Alva as a Dutch great leader, or Conde as a great Belgian leader.

Not one of Civ's finer moments- still perhaps someone enjoyed gratuitously insulting the Scots.
