Would you enjoy Civ less if your home civ was not in?

I often play Korea. Not because I live here but mostly because they are scientific and commercial, traits I like. I also play the agricultural civs a lot.

Canada (my original home country) was in CTP2 but I never played them because I thought it was a bit silly to have them at 4000 BC. In fact, if it was up to me there would only be seven civs in 4000 BC. Luckily, smarter heads are making the game and we have lots of choices.

The mighty Belgians never were in Civ, so that makes a moot point.

Aaaaah, right - Scandinavians. You are right, I never really thought about it. That is quite a pitiful attempt at putting some of the upper northern Civs into one pot...

That makes me kind of wonder... Just hypothetically, if in one of my games the americans settled on a previously undiscovered continent sometime after 1492, they would not event stand the chance of a marshmallow in hell to survive. So I guess making Civs start at the time they normally would is not an option either

Well, I would certainly like to play as the Hebrews. I also believe that they are a real candidate for a civ to be seen in Civ one day.

I think I prefer that my civ isn't in the game. Makes me much more apt to chosing a random civ. I think i'm much too much of a homer to chose anything but my country, should my country be like, England.

It makes zero difference to me. Winning (or losing) the game as "France" or "Japan" or "Mali" is fundamentally the same. If you pick "Rome", for example, it's not like the game has the ability to impart some profound insight on the nature of the Roman people/republic/empire... other than a unit or two, some arbitrary traits, and a couple of leader-head graphics, there's no difference between Rome and another other country. Ergo, the country you pick is largely irrelevant.

I prefer playing as England, which I count as my home country. (I'm one of those 3rd Generation Colonials. Heck, Most of my Family lives in Britain!) Indeed I would be rather upset if she wasn't in the game!

If not England then I play as North Africans (Namely Carthage) or other Eurasian Civilizations (France, Germany, Russia, Turkey, Persia in Civ3 for the Immortals, China, Japan)

Fundamentally they may be the same, but the game would not be much fun if they were really all the same... Imagine none of the Civs having a leaderhead, only some special abilities: they would have no personality whatsoever and IMHO that also has a big part in making the game fun.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, Civ would not be the same if you could only play some fantasy civs. It would seem that I (and I guess most players here) need "real" civs to be able to identify myself to some of the civs - but the selection of those civs is largely irrelevant.

Upset as in "if England's not in I won't enjoy/buy the game" or upset as in "grrrmmbl, England's not in but what the heck, it's such a fine game"?

I never play the U.S. nor do I put them in my games. I do believe the U.S. "has" a civilization, though, since that is what so many people fight against (physcially and culturally) around the world. Many countries exist, but you have to be a "civ" to make it into the game.

I would be upset if the classical civs were not included, and I like the European ones, and other major world civs as well. Not too keen on some of the lesser civs, though.
