  • Naval Combat in cIV

There seems to be a very small amount of information on this topic.

Will there be privateers still? I think that's a great feature of Civ3.

What about the infamous "sub bug" in Civ3. I have to assume that has been fixed. For those who don't know, in Civ3 subs are invisible to most other naval ships. And when moving surface ships -- not destroyers, but rather battleships, cruisers for example -- you ran the risk of moving into a square which had an enemy sub. Instead of moving in the square and not attacking, it would initiate combat. This sucked because it would immediately created a state of war with a civ you didn't intend to fight. Most players didn't use subs for this reason.

Will subs still carry nukes? With no tactical nukes in cIV and not being able to move ICBMs from the city they are created in, it doesn't seem likely.

Will there be a change to the movement values of ships? Many people feel that they should greatly extend the range of naval ships.

Is there a units list of naval vessels in cIV?

We know that friendly land units can occupy the same tile. There's no reason to think that doesn't apply to naval units as well.

That's a definite no, for the reasons you state.

Solver already confirmed that the new mechanics of sharing tiles with friendly units has eliminated the sub bug.

Also how about Aircraft Carriers? I know in SMAC(X) the AI was clueless on how to use these units. Is the AI any better at handling these units now?

I read somewhere that Naval Combat was greatly improved.

Lets see what Solver has to say on monday.

OK, so its Monday now-where is Solvers preview ! Just kidding-I realise that is Monday HIS time ! Seriously though, if its 11am over here (17th October) what time should I look out for it if we assume it will be posted first thing?

I can only imagine what the anticipation will be like as the we get closer to the release date. It's a fever pitch. Look how desperate we are for naval info!

Well, it's 3 or 4 am in Latvia. This means the preview has been long overdue already!

Be fair Spiffor. I want info as much as I do, but Solver isn't some posting machine-even he needs sleep ! The good part, though, is this means I probably only have a few more hours to wait-though they are going to be some of the longest hours of my life (barring the hours and days I still have to wait for Civ4!!!!!!!)
