It was annoying yes, but it helped build character through designing better categories.

As for BBSes, I've been DarkCloud on BBSes since 1996

Civ4 being everything on Apolyton, anything also becomes Civ4.

Guys you bring up sweet memories.
Civ1 was my second Sid Meier's game. The first was Rail Road Tycoon, which also really deserves a second version. Still have the floppies around somewhere.
For years I have run a BBS myself, including a section about Civ, with all patches etc. Another game we played a lot on the BBS was VGAPlanets.
I was away from Civ for quite some time, because Civ3 disappointed me. Now the fever attacks again.

Lasgt I checked Railroad Tycoon 3 was in the shelves. But it's not made by Sid AFAIK.

Railroad Tycoon is now devoloped by another company POPTOP or something simmilar. And the latest version is RRT3.
I can never forget my first civ game. Started as Russians on random map. The first goody hut gave me Leningrad I had almost no idea what I was doing but I just kept playing ........

RRT2 and 3 were released yes. But they do not compare to RRT1. Focus is on graphics, gameplay was removed. No more signals, no more accidents possible etc. Also the UI which was very easy was now mouse only IIRC, no more laying of railroads with the keyboard. Probably some people liked these nice visuals, but I look for a good game first, visuals second. So I am still waiting for Sid Meier's RRT2.

I was Greek in my first game..

I had no idea what I was doing

I mined every hill and mountain on the map, thinking my cities would benefit from it.

During that time, I got my Dad to play it, I remember I would watch him play because he was better than me (I was only about 9), I remember I used to crack up laughing when a Stealth bomber would fly over his land, because he would say "eh!!?? whats that??". After all, he had only barely researched metallurgy.

Yeah, I can remember the first time I encountered vastly superior technology like that. It was probably in my 2nd or 3rd game, and I started as America on the actual Earth map. I killed the Aztecs early and was pretty much free to expand at a leisurely pace. After a while I decided to put some Phalanxes in a boat and hop on over to Europe and greet the neighbors. Lo and behold, I land and the first thing I see are railroads surrounding large Russian cities and---WHAT'S THAT BIG METAL THING WITH WHEELS?!!!

Needless to say, my hearty expeditionary force was never seen again, and I began a very panicked research drive...

Wow. Didn't even know there was a Railroad Tycoon 3. My Railroad Tycoon 2 is sitting on the shelf collecting dust. I'm looking at it with disdain right now thinking about the wasted money

Me too. Haven't played RRT2 in ages, and won't get #3 either.

Was RRT2 any good? I used to LOVE the original.

I never even played the game... I installed it years ago, didn't quite understand the interface, pulled out the manual. While thumbing through I received a phone call, left my office, never to return to playing.

Don't know why I keep it on the shelf. What a waste.

Okay, the Civ1 discussion was iffy but now it's gone completely over the line.

We have a Civ1 forum where you can reminisce about Civ1 and an Other Games forum where you can talk about Railroad Tycoon. Feel free to continue the discussion there.
