  • How many of you remember THIS about combat in Civ I:

When you had your units stacked, they were defended by the best defending unit in the stack. If that stack was attacked and that ONE UNIT lost, you lost EVERYONE IN THE STACK!

    Remember that?

back in my day we didn't complain about howthe game played! We just... uh... played the game!

I remember that about Civ2 (and how the AI would put everything under a battleship). Didn't know it was also in Civ1.

It is, when you reflect on it, pretty amazing how the game has changed and yet still has that flavor that ruins loving relationships, families, school careers, jobs, etc...

I remember that in Civ 1, and I was only seven at the time.

Can you remember when your only source for computer games was print magazines ? It must have been around the same time.
My point is: things have changed. I bet everyone was p*ssed at how combat worked (i.e. tanks regularly losing against warriors) or when they lost a stack of units. We just had no way of telling everyone how we felt. Today, you don't like something, you post it in your blog, send an angry e-mail, shout at people in forums and start an online petition.

I've been online either via internet or dialing in to BBSes for about twenty of my twenty-eight years. The griping has been there for about as long...

Though people seemed more forgiving back then, too.

Not really, I loved every aspect of the game back then. We just didn't know better...

I actually liked that feature a lot. And ZOC. It gave a lot of tactical considerations that were fun.
Well, that and being totally unrealistic.

I remember scouring BBSes and the old CompuServe service for information on games (including Civ) back in the early 90s. How the times have changed...

Brian Reynolds used to hang out on the GamePubB (was that the one we discussed Civ on?) forum on CompuServe. I remember when the first patch was released for Civ 2 and we were all excited because Brian actually implemented a lot of our suggestions...

I remember it. It was immensly irritating, but it did prevent me from using the stack of doom.

I still remember my first game of Civ ever.

My brother came back on his first break during his freshman year of college. He had a laptop with him, and told me about this cool game he got from a friend that he knew I would love, as I was a big history buff.

So, after dinner (7:00 PM or so) I sat down and booted up the game. I didn't know what I was doing, but I dove right in and started a game as the Romans. I remember the first civ I encountered was the Aztecs.

Anyway, the next time I looked at the clock it was 5:00 AM and I was in utter shock at where the night had gone. I'd just spent 10 hours straight parked in front of a computer. A love affair was born that night...

my first game I was the egyptians I think

I didn't figure out how to change governments or the tax rate

when I met others they were rediculously higher tech then I (I don't think I even got gunpowder type units)

second game I think I was the americans (dont' really remember, I do remember that I was the second most powerful nation, the russians were the first, and kept invading me)

I think I had cannons or something against thier tanks..

both games were played with my brother, my uncle bought the game (I think I was with him when he bought it)

Here is my C1 story. It happened a long time ago, so forgive me if I am mixing things up.

I had a naval task force park near a comp city. I sent about 5 battleships to attack the city (attack 18 ?); they were all destroyed by what I believe to have been caravans. I know the comp didn't move them around because he could establish a trade route instantly, but apparently, he had to build the units neithertheless. I was so angry, I sent in the last ship that was left: an aircraft carrier, attack value 1. Guess what: he took out all the freaking caravans.

I don't remember much of C1, but this was one of those "great moments".

Nope, no bbs for me. Phone company was state property (no flat rate, no competition), and there was no way to afford 1h hour/day or so to dial in with a modem at 1 kb/s as a little child. Unless perhaps you were phreaking. I started internet in '94 - with a 2 mbit connection in the dorm.

P.S.: Leaders/civs were all the same, so I had the habbit of playing the civ that fought best in the game before. I played a lot as the Russians and Mongols.
