I would hope that it does something cool, anyways.

2 more questions which you aren't allowed to answer:

      a) a city can be Holy City to more than 1 religion I guess (i.e. you found them while only having 1 city (e.g. OCC))
      b) Who gets the HC in a MP coop game ? How is the benefit (culture, money) divided between 2 allied players if there is only one ? And if there are 2 HC: is the benefit split equally ? Or do both get 100% (which kinda sounds like overkill) ?

Yeah, I know, 10 more days....

HC is the natural, slow way of spreading religion. Send out missionaries and convince them of the true Path of Origin. Ah, sorry, but whenever I hear "missionary", I have to think of Stargate and the Ori.

The answer to your first question is yes, one city can be the Holy City for multiple religions. mm crusades.

If I'm not mistaken, either Markos or Solver said that auto spread was rather slow and that you should spread you religon manually.

While it's not the same as the capital, it does bear resemblance to the palace.

Well, how are missionaries built? If you can destroy a Holy City before it has time to spread, I'm betting it will limit the number of missionaries that can be pumped out.

Anyways, it's true that if you are pretty quick - buhdism and hinduism, judaism and the first religion have a headstart on islam and christianity... but these two last religion come with a missionary as an added bonus to make sure it's not too late... As far as Solver said in his preview.

Markos said the auto-spread is rather slow, but he has no clue . The auto-religion spread, especially if you build a Shrine, isn't that poor.

The later religions can lead to interesting scenarios. For example, someone else founded Judaism, it spread to your cities, and you adopted it way in the Ancient era. Later, however, in the Medieval, you happen to found Taoism or Islam. You can choose to essentially ignore that, or to quickly concentrate on spreading your newly founded religion and switching to that.

What happens if a religion's holy city is razed before the religion has spread to other cities (should be possible in the early game)? Is the religion 'lost'?

I believe Solver said that if the automatic spread of religion is slowed if a Holy City is razed, Not halted.

Besides you could still spread it manually via Missionaries.

IIRC, to spread a religion via missionaries, the city building the missionary must have adopted the religion. I'm assuming that the holy city was razed while it was the religion's only city.

Religions spread via missionaries and cities with the religion. If you have neither, I would imagine the religion dies. Fun.
