Voted twice now, not that is going to make any difference.

Would ming at apolyton dot net work?

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

While being a nice enough concept, that Walk of Game thing is a pitiful excuse for a big marketing action. Now before you start flaming away, I have my reasons for saying so:

      1) Their choice of games is biased from the start. There are games in there that are much too recent to compare them with older titles. Why? Because the markets for those games cannot be compared either. While Myst (1993) and Quake (1996) were big commercial hits in their time, their success cannot be compared with that of the Sims (2000-today) or Ever Quest (2000-today). There mere *much* less gamers at that time, and in the case of The Sims, it is an ongoing franchise that spans into today's Billion-dollar worth game market. Not fair.

      2) What about Populous (1989)? That game is cited as reference for Peter Molyneux, yet it is not in the list. That game was a small revolution in its time...

      3) Why are there no RPGs in that list? Arena (1993) or Daggerfall (1996) were games that had quite a following, and which still live on today. At least one of them deserves to be mentioned...

      4) What about the Wing Commander series and its creator, Chris Roberts? Those games had a gigantic impact from 1990 to 1997, and were the first with real big budgets and movie cutscenes.

I find this very frustrating, because for gamers of my generation it means that the games we played and that marked us never stood a slightest chance in hell right from the start. However, you can be sure I'll be there every day to vote for Civ

A good consolation for me is that (Edited by Locutus: a site-that-cannot-be-named-or-linked-to) exist - their hall of fame is a real jewel, and only Moby Games can compete with the amount of info they have on each game.

For reference, here the list of games on Walk of Game and their first release dates:

      ????: Pong
      1983: Donkey Kong
      1983: Fox McCloud (Star Fox)
      1983: Frogger
      1983: Pac-Man
      1984: Pitfall Harry (Pitfall)
      1986: Castlevania
      1986: Samus Aran (Metroid)
      1987: Final Fantasy
      1988: Tetris
      1991: Civilization
      1991: Space Invaders
      1992: Street Fighter II
      1993: Doom
      1993: Myst
      1993: Madden NFL
      1994: Mortal Kombat
      1996: Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
      1996: Quake
      1997: Grand Theft Auto
      1998: Half-Life
      1998: Resident Evil
      1998: StarCraft
      1999: EverQuest
      2000: The Sims

Yeah, sure. Give people the possibility to vote on Pitfall and The Sims. Brilliant.

        wow, was populous that early?
i remember playing for ages and being really hooked.

the only downside was getting frustrated by the strong increasing difficulty level. IIRC i did not succeed past level 400 (of 1000 that is!)

I played populous for ages too - and I had the same difficulty problems... I absolutely can't remember up to which level I played, though... Hmmm, I think I'll have to take it back out again one night just to check

I totally agree with AeonOfTime. This has to be the weirdest list of games to compare to each other that anyone has put together

Also they mention Will Wright as the creator of SimCity, but doesn't have it as an option

Also some of the games mentioned I've never heard about, like Fox McCloud (Star Fox)

And most people who vote there have probably never heard of most of them because there's probably a lot of 13 year olds
This space is empty... or is it?

Right, I forgot about that one. It struck me as being particularly odd, as that too is one of the most well known titles in gaming history...

Makes you wonder what the real purpose of that list is... It's like Madden NFL: what's that doing here? I for one never heard of it, it's recent and the only sports game in the list (cajoling EA, are they?). If the purpose was to include a sports game, I would have chosen one of the Winter/Olympic games series for ex.

                  Populous is great

Madden NFL is not recent... the first Madden game came out in 1991 I think (whenever Sega Genesis first came out)

You are right - at Moby Games they put the start of the NFL series at 1993. Before that it was called John Madden Football and started in 1988. My bad

The popular games are winning, not the best.

Thank God there are enough gamers to support the development of games like Civilization.

Also Roberta Wright is missing with her King Quest series. And was not KQ 5 the first game to have 256 colors?
I remember that KQ 5 would not play on a VGA monitor, you needed a SVGA monitor w/256 colors.

you should remove that link to underdogs, they have free DL that go against the COC....

@realpolitic: The popular games are winning, not the best
That's sad but true. However, it's important to look at those games in their respective environments. Myst was extremely popular for its time, as is The Sims today. Making people vote for both together today can only have one result. I am not against popular - really popular games are not necessarily bad games... The Sims is a good game if you happen to like it, with a lot of intertesting expansions and a wealth of possibilities.

@Joseph: Also Roberta Wright is missing with her King Quest series
You're right - that was a very good series. Makes me think also of games like Sam & Max and the Monkey Island series... Damn, there were some good games in those years, weren't there?

And why is it that I am suddenly thinking of my grandfather who used to say stuff like "they don't do them like that anymore" or "t'was much better then"

you should remove that link to underdogs, they have free DL that go against the COC
Hmmmm... I guess the legality of the whole operation can be regarded as questionable, but they have always been very straight when game authors would make removal requests, or if companies decided to sell their games again. I think that's why they are still online and kicking - but I'll refer to our revered admins here... shall I remove the link?

Seriously though, I edited out the link. We do indeed not allow links to sites like that.
