anyone who's interested in a critical scientific, yet readable evaluation on how factors like geographic starting positions affect historical country growth and development in the long run should read David S. Landes' "The Wealth and Poverty of Nations: Why Some Are so Rich and Some so Poor"

i'm a great civ-fan from civ1 on, i've read the book and i loved it. if every firaxian-developer reads this book , civ5 will maybe finally overcome the ICS-issue once and for all. anyone who still thinks ICS is realistic and historically correct should read this book!

it starts at the beginning of history and explains in an illustrative way how the countries / cultures of history started, which factors led to their growth / decline, how starting postitons matter, and so on...

a great read for every civ-fan (a must-read for every firaxian..., well maybe for civ5

Not to mention it's still there, unlike the Roman empire.

the romans have more in common with today's italians than the modern egyptians have with the ancient egyptians

            I piss on Egypt.

And Egypt sprays a high pressure jet of cobra urine back on you- for you have forgotten the Islamic dynasties of the Fatimids, Ayyubids and the Mamelukes, who ruled from Egypt.

They have just as much right to be called 'Egyptian' dynasties as the Macedonian Ptolemies, or the Nubian pharoahs.

In fact the Mamelukes even echoed the Ptolemies by having a female ruler- unusual for an Islamic dynasty.

Yes, the former are quite a bit closer to the highlight of their 'past' civ then the latter, aren't they?

PLEASE people, what were all forgetting that though Eygpt and Rome were ONCE great, The hardly had GREAT in their name!

GREAT Britain on the other hand, Well we ruled the world. Face it its true. And if anyone deserves to be pissing on anyone, Its the Queen (not that she would).

Tell me another country greater than GREAT Britain and I'll call you a liar and wait to ambush you with a smelly sock full of old pennies.

Britain didn't rule the world, only parts of it.

And countries being 'greater'? Depends of ones standards of course.

britain's status as a world power is history. despite all remaining fuss about "the empire", britain is now merely a medium power, just like france, germany or italy.
and unless it unites with either the u.s. or the rest of europe, britain will remain "size M".

Since when is the European Union considered "size L"?

i didn't say it already is size L!
it isn't even a country (yet). i'm talking about the (far) future...
now the e.u. is a union of size M and size S countries. it surely has the potential for L, though, maybe XL

Yeah, perhaps as "the Union of European Nations and American States".

The Empire? Fallen? Impossible! We're just allowing you to think we've lost our empire!

You think all those dollars in the Canadian Budget are being used on Healthcare and Welfare? HAH! It's a re-armament program to get one up on those Yanks!

So it's not "The Union of European Nations and American States" It's the "Extended United Kingdoms and British Interests" That means you're next after the Americans, Suez!

Edit: Yes we did rule the world. Well the important parts anyhow.
