So exactly what are the reasons they don't ship Internationally? (I can understand the non-english speaking countries would be too costly to send an english version), but what about the english speaking countries?

Not releasing it internationally (at the same time), encourages piracy.

It is also an unfair advantage as the U.S. get a lead on the mechanics of the game; thus also encouraging piracy.

The Civ3 Limited Edition was supposed to be only in North America but I bought it in a shop here in Korea. It had all the goodies plus a Korean manual. Maybe we'll get something similar this time.

But I'm not going to buy it until it shows up at YesAsia. Chips and Bits kills you on the shipping. YesAsia has free shipping.

the preorder version, ie "special edition" is US only, they haven't said anything about a regular version of the game being NA release only.

What about the people in non-english speaking countries who speak english almost like their native language?

                [edit]
German PC-gaming website GameStar is just doing an online-survey about how good visitors to their site speak english and so far 16963 votes were cast: 34.5% (5850) said they speak english so well that they prefer games even with lots of text (e.g. Morrowind) to play in english. Still 39.8% (6759) said they know enough to play simpler games (e.g. Doom3) in english. 22.8% said they rather play localized games and only 2.8% voted "bad to almost nothing" when asked how well they speak english

So we have around 74% who speak english quite well and 26% for whom games in german are better. Okay, online surveys are to be taken with a grain of salt, but the point is there.

Another thing about english games is that e.g. I have learned a lot through gaming and I cannot emphasize this enough! I started with Civ1 (english; on the mac) when I was around 12 years and didn't know much about english, but games are a wonderful way of learning.
I told that to my sister for whom I tried to get as much english games as possible and she's really ahead of the others in her class (okay she's a clever girl in general).

Additionally with games, you HEAR what they say (and most of the time there are subtitles) so you don't develop such a strong foreign accent.

                edit2: OMG so many errors

Heck, I've preordered mine at EB games, customs or no customs.

Would've been wiser to buy it over here at a third of what is going to cost me, but oh well, it's only once every four years that civ comes out.

euh the world is bigger then just US & UK

The EU market alone is already >300 million and if you count in the big asean markets I think their marketing department is missing out some big opportunities (even if at first they could only pre-order english version)

                            Cyber,

If you're not gonna have Civ4 shipped from the US, you'll want to keep an eye on this shop: http://www.gcshop.nl/ (it's not listed yet but I'm sure it will be soon enough). It's run by a couple of students as a non-profit site. I order all my games there, it can sometimes save up to €15(!) compared to regular retailers (not always though). They often have special deluxe editions and the like as well. I know I'll be buying my copy there

There should be more than enough americans in the netherlands that you could ask. Just try your nearest coffee shop
