I will start on the standard difficulty level (like Regent in Civ3, no bonuses to either side), and that will probably make me lose because of all the new things in the game .

I play the first game on chieftain so I can get familiar with the interface and the new features, so chances for winning is high... unless the game ships with a bug that makes chieftain level the hardest level in the game
IIRC this happened in some game a long time ago... what game was that?
I'll play my first Civ IV game on Monarch level. Since I can beat Civ III on Demigod, I should be able to still win while making mistakes in Civ IV.

"have some fun" <-----
I'll start on chieftain. Learn how the new game mechanics works, the basics. The hugest map available, lots of civs... Civpedia, rules, all that new stuff!
Yes, I'm optimistic.
I'll probabily win.
I'm optimistic too, since I'll start on chieftain as well. It's more relaxing to learn the game that way... read the civilopedia, play around with all the new features
I will not win my first Civ4 game. I will not lose it either. I will not finish it, plain and simple.
Just like in Civ3, I am planning to start a game on standard difficulty level (whether it's called Prince or Regent or whatever, we'll see), just to tinker around with interface and game options. After I think I got a clue, I will abandon it and start a game at a slight disadvantage (Monarch) and this time stick with it to the end. And yes, I am positive that I will win it.
