If there is a game that you can be sure will be worth it before buying, that's Civ4. Even if you don't like it, the amount of time spent to discover that will be longer than the time spent playing many other games.

Some shops work 24/7. So if you know a shop like that you can drive and get one at 0:00 if you're lucky. Don't forget to call them, not all of them put games to shelves at 0:00.
I heard it was a popular practice in USA during a World of Warcraft release, especially if you consider how fast WoW was sold. Too bad a guy who brouht WoW for me wasn't so lucky... Well, getting WoW at 9am USA time in release day when you live in Russia was good enough
