Moot point for me anyway. My PC's sound has been broke since I upgraded to XP and I've been too lazy to get new hardware. Its an old P3 1GHz anyway. Hope I can run the game when it comes out.

dont quote me, but some insider thinks the following
* Operating System: Windows® 98/Me/2000/XP
* Processor: Pentium® 1.0 GHz or higher
* Memory: 256 MB RAM
* Hard Disk Space: 1.2 GB Free
* CD-ROM Drive: 4X Speed
* Video: 32 MB video card* with Hardware T&L support
* Sound: Windows® 98/Me/2000/XP-compatible sound card
* DirectX®: DirectX® version 9.0b (included) or higher
Civ4's requirements might be slightly higher, but probably not too much.anti steam and proud of it
CDO ....its OCD in alpha order like it should be

Looks like I'll be able to squeak in unless they up anything."And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. Well, if the graphics card only goes to DX 8... (at least for a graphics intensive game I have).
So perhaps things will be different with Civ IV.

For years some software house tried to add good relactions between music and game situation: some have success, some not.
I'll enjoy a music (or a special sound effect) quite related to my game success (or lack of): in the old "Popolous" you can ear a heartbeat sound, at a slow pace if anything was going well, at high rate if you're facing an enemy attack and are losing terrain.
Anything on that line could be adapted on the new culture and Leader mood of Civ 4.
And surely we can also have that "mute music" command it's not difficult to code..."We are reducing all the complexity of billions of people over 6000 years into a Civ box. Let me say: That's not only a PkZip effort....it's a real 'picture to Jpeg heavy loss in translation' kind of thing."
