I agree. But I still wonder to what extent you can combine units. The army system in Civ III was just scrap.

It looks to me as if the planet isn't actually spherical, just tapered off a bit near the poles. In fact, the map may actually be entirely flat, and they just make it look warped when you zoom out.

Heeey, that'd make sense. Is there any indication anywhere as to the truth of this?

Yes, it's confirmed in the Gamespot preview that you can find here.

Indeed, thanks for the link Nikolai. I've actually read the preview, but couldn't remember the results, as I'm a wee bit inebriated at the moment, having just come back from watching the final UEFA cup game, where my home team happened to win the cup.

Was just about to post that link, but you got there a few minutes earlier

              Anyway, from the mentioned preview:

Units will no longer have health bars, but their strength will be represented in their number. At full strength, a unit will have three units, and when it takes damage it loses a single unit until it is destroyed

First it says units will not have health bars, but at the end he says that each unit is 1/x of the health, so basicly number of units is how much health it has, just a bit weird that he starts saying it doesn't have health

In the middle he says that units with full health have 3 units/health, but doesn't most units on the screenshots we've seen have 5 units/health?
This space is empty... or is it?

No, no, he says, they don't have health bars, they still have health.

Makes sense to me. Elite units have more health than regulars right? Though I'm not sure if the concept of unit experience is still in the game.

/me goes to reading Locutus' extrensive post to find out.

Something I didn't get out of the interview(s) or any info about Civ4, is this: Is Civ4 going to be mostly a war game and a civ simulator 2nd? That is, imo, what Civ3 is...

Details I got from the new Gamespot article (I'll be merging all this in the fact thread later):

                    - France: leaders Napolean (bonus: more powerful units) and Louix XIV (culture bonuses)

                    - No more city flipping in Civ4

                    - Daoism/Taoism confirmed as a religion

                    - If you convert a foreign city to your religion, "You'll also receive line-of-sight advantages in that city, and if you capture or control the main holy city of each religion, you will get lines of sight in all of the cities in the world that have that religion."

                    - On Great People: "You get them by building specialized cities, so instead of every city ending up to be exactly the same as the others, you'll customize each city for a specific purpose, such as science or culture. he type of unit you have will determine your reward. Great engineers will allow you to rush production on building a wonder (like in previous games). But a great merchant may let you establish an extremely lucrative trade deal, or a great scientist will significantly boost your research."

                    - Units will no longer have health bars, but their strength will be represented in their number. At full strength, a unit will have three units, and when it takes damage it loses a single unit until it is destroyed.

                    - When you're engaged in diplomacy, you'll switch to the diplomacy screen and see a 3D avatar of the leader you're bargaining with. (Oh yeah, diplomacy has also been completely overhauled).

On the screenshots that Gamespot released, they have the following to say: "And yes, the early screens looked a bit muddled, but the game looks a lot cleaner and more beautiful now and in person."

I just read about half of "The List" posted here at poly by DarkCloud and other contributors. I am glad to see that a lot of our wishes in "The List" appear to be in Civ4 in some form or another..., particularly the govt model...which by the way I really like, from what I can tell...

Have you seen the 13 minutes long video? It's worth it

I especially love the leaderheads. In the tradiotn of Civ3's leaderheads, and Louis XIV reminds me of the French governors in Pirates!

All my doubts about the graphics are gone after watching that video.

i'm REALLY gonna need CivAnon when this game comes out

Sounds plausible, but IIRC about 70% of all unit groups has 5 'units' in them. That's a high number of elite units?

each civilization has two leaders you can choose from

Not sure if I should read that much into this, but from what I understand here it sounds like ALL civs have two leaders, while earlier it was stated that only about half the civs had two leaders...
This space is empty... or is it?

in the video he states that some civs have 2, but not all, cuz they couldnt find 2 for some of them.

did anyone pick up on this yet?

new victory: alliance victory, where you can go with another civ to the end?

*edit* just checked the facts thread. guess so. forgive me, i'm getting excited
