    32 is ok.

Any more and you'll have turns lasting an entire day (consideirng how crappy Civ3 was with regard to computing turns).

    Oh, and barbs don't count

Would more civs really slow the game down? On my games the map is usually filled with cities, so even with more civs they would still be playing with the same number of cities, so the game wouln't be THAT much slower.

        16 major, unlimited minor.

As for total available, I'd say start with about 45 major and add more in expansions. Minor available: 100, with the ability for the player to add more and keep the official ones.

Optimal number of major civs: 16.

If we could move the discussion to the "fixed" version of this thread...that would be great.

If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for her prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandmother. If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It's that fundamental belief -- I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper -- that makes this country work." - Barack Obama
