  • How many Civilizations at max should be in a Game?

**Dangit, my poll is ruined! Argh, it must reset the multiple choices option when you change the number of items to vote on. Could a mod fix this please? Thanks**

Well, here's poll about how many Civilizations at max should be allowed in a game.

I've also included the idea of "minor civs"* that own only one or two cities that you can come across. Hmm, perhaps if minor civs are still around when someone gets eliminated, they can become a major civ. Afterall, in history there are many examples of previously almost entirely unknown groups coming to power (e.g. the Romans).

I allowed people to choose mutliple options, but please only choose only one of the major and one of the minor. Thanks.

    -Drachasor

PS. Drat, I forgot to have an option for no minor civs. If a mod could change that, it would be great, otherwise just don't vote for any minor option if you don't like the idea.

*I think this has been discussed many times, but I don't recall who brought it up. I suppose it is like goodie-hut civs, but more fleshed out.

And this is not a multiple choice poll.

There should be no hardcoded limit.

Thanks for the votes and comments, but I hope a mod comes and fixes and then resets the poll sometime soon. *crosses fingers*.

How many Civilizations at max should be in a Game?

              All of them.
(However, of course, it will only run on a Cray supercomputer or a Civ equivalent of IBM's Deep Blue. )

I think that 32 major civs and 32 minor tribes should be the maximum allowed at a time, mainly for gameplay reasons--having more would overtax any current desktop system (two to four GHz and a GB or two of RAM). However, if it is the total number available to select from that we are talking about, then I would like to see 128 civs and 128 minor tribes available.

That said, how will minor tribes be distinguished from major civilizations? The simplest thing to do would be to give them the same starting units, etc. as the civs, but to make them unable to build Settlers. Doing this would ensure that they stay fairly small throughout the game.

No hardcoded limit would be favourable.

The better question is, what should the optimal number of civs be so that when playtesting the rules and mechanics are optimised for that given number of civs. Different numbers of civs will have different effects on game dynamics that may not be very easy to scale properly. I'd like to see the game designed for around 6-8 civs, with some playtesting up to 16, but the option to go as high as your system will allow.

I'd like standard to be 16-24.

                        many but not too many
it would become difficult to separate different civs just by color

The one thing mods cannot do is change a regular poll into a multiple choice poll... it's a bug in the VB software.

Only option is to start another poll.

Wow, ok, just my luck. I'll make another poll then...

If you really could have as many civs as you want, it still shouls be possible to set an upper limit for the game. If that's reached, no more civs can spawn from existing ones (until you, er, make their number decrease).

How much is the optimal number? I have no idea how Civ with 64 or 256 civs would be... certainly very different, but more realistic, too.
