  • Zones of control?

This is one thing I miss from earlier versions. I would even go as far to restrict it ONLY to forts and then only if they are manned.

Is there a mod available that will:

    1) create a zone of control (in the classic Civ sense) around a manned fort?

    2) give any artillery units (catapult and up) auto attacks if an enemy moves within that zone (during that enemy's turn).

Number 2 is kinda a wishlist thing. Number 1, though, would make the early and mid-game more interesting. Being able to set up a string of forts is a lot of fun and would certainly hold those damned barbarians at bay. In fact, it would be nice to give an invisible zone around forts, say three or four squares in each direction, in which new barbarian cities cannot crop up.

Anyone know anything about any mods similar to this?

What bothers me is that it is entirely impossible to block a choke point outside of your national borders--for example, an isthmus or strait. Even in CivIII, you could block every tile with a line of units, but in CIV, the AI can just walk right THROUGH your units as though they were not there.

      Ravenloff,

While there is no Zone of Control (which I too sorely miss), you can keep barbarians at bay and completely prevent them if you want.

All you need to do get rid of the "Fog of War", ie the "greyed" out part of the map that you can see but cannot tell if there is a unit there. I highly recommend using Scouts for this purpose as they are really cheap and are quick to build (in most cases) but in the beginning Archers and Warriors are good too, since they have some offense to take out the barbarians. If you have any more questions about this please feel free to ask.

        Ravenloff,

Unfortunately, the Civ series somewhat strays from the old school war gaming conventions where units had ZoC's and Final Protective Fire, Supply and Communications lines etc...

You have to think of the units more like chess pieces on an oversized board.
