[SDK] Dale's Combat Mod!

This sounds interesting, but I need some help understanding what it does differently from the vanilla game.
Specifically, how does vanilla combat work to begin with and what is wrong with it that I should want to use this mod instead?
(Typing in "combat" or something like that using search isn't helpful, for obvious reasons, though I did fine one thread that was somewhat useful.)

You can find a pretty in-depth description of vanilla combat here:

Vanilla combat: the best defender is automatically selected to battle your attacker when you move it into battle. Only one unit will fight at any given time. Having ranged units gives no benefit to your stack of units. Aircraft play a very limited role in land/naval combat.
My mod: both attacking and defending stack are aranged in a way more like reality, with ranged units behind, and melee units in front. Multiple units battle at the same time. Having ranged units in your stack provide support to your melee units by "firing arrows" or "bombarding" the enemy at the same time as the melee combat. Aircraft are now fully utilised in battle with air support/interceptions during the stack battle.

I was almost there until I got to the "Bernoulli process" bit. That's enough for me, thanks.

OK, but how is the "attacker" selected when there is a stack of attacking units made up of different units? The attacking unit with the highest attack value?
YOU choose what to attack with. If you "stack attack", then the unit with the highest odds of winning attacks first.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

That's what happens when you start asking questions, and when DeepO also gets on the answering.

Thank God for this mod. (And Dale, too.)Call-to-Power II lives on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi guys. It's been a while, huh?
The simplistic, annoying combat was the main reason I stopped playing this game last year. I decided to give it another try a few weeks ago, and have since learned to appreciate the culture and diplomacy aspects enough to make it worth the trouble to try and fix the units, and to check out the mod scene here. This mod is more than I had hoped for.
I have spent most of the last four years playing and modding Medieval: Total War, so I have vastly increased my knowledge of pre-modern combat. This made me all too aware that about half the units were in this game needed fixing. This is in addition to all the stuff that you have been addressing. I am frankly shocked that no one seems to have set about trying to correct these things. It seems the Rings movies were a big influence on whomever set things up.
If I alter the current beta's units xml to include the changes I think need to be made, would you be willing to include the changes in the third beta? Or you might want to wait until the third beta has been out for testing and then look at my proposals for a subsequent release.
