  • [Mod] New Unique Units (Need your input!)

    Description

Being somewhat dissatisfied with the selection of unique units in civ games I felt like expanding on them and hopefully rebalancing some that may need it (ie praetorians). Ideally I would like the uniques not to be vastly more powerful but to provide some interesting choices.

My initial idea was to have 4 uniques per civilization. 2 sets of 2 in different eras. This gives a bit of a chance for a few comebacks for civs that have been losing. It might be difficult to find those units in 2 eras so I would want to either balance it to 1 very strong unit in each of 2 eras or 3 normalish units in 1 era. Does that make any sense to you?

What I want from you is ideas about ~ historically accurate units and any thoughts you have on balance.

Here's what I've thought out so far for UUs

    New Units

    Rome

    Legion (reqs bronzeworking)
    4 pow
    +100% vs barbarians; Builds roads

Praetorian Guard (+25% cost, replaces axeman)
    6 pow
+25% city def; +25% vs mounted; +50% vs melee

Marian Legion (+25% cost, replaces swordsman)
    6 pow
+25% city attack; +50% vs archers

    England

Welsh Longbow (replaces longbow, -10% cost)
    6 pow
+25% city def; +25% hill def; +25% forest def

Maybe a knight replacement as well?

    Man O War (replaces frigate)
    10 pow
    +10% Bombard

    Japan

    Ninja (available with currency)
    6 pow
invisible; cannot pillage; -50% city attack; no def bonuses

    High Samurai (replaces knight)
    10 pow
    +2 first strikes; Immune to first strikes;

    USA

    M1A2 (replaces modern tank)
    40 pow
    +1 sight radius

    Greece

    Peltast (reqs bronzeworking)
    5 pow
+2 first strike; +25% vs melee

    Spain

    Conquistador (replaces musketman)
    9 pow
Spreads state religion when conquering a city

    Mounted Conquistador (replaces knight)
    10 pow 2 mov
Immune to First Strikes; +50% vs melee
Spreads state religion when conquering a city

    Russia

Red Army Conscript (reqs communism, 75% less than cost of infantry)
    10 pow
    0 movement

    Katyusha (replaces artillery)
    Same pow as arty
    +100% vs armour

    Germany

    Berserker (replaces axeman, -25% cost)
    5 pow
    +50% vs melee

    Teutonic Knight (replaces Knight)
same as knight but spreads religion on conquest

    Stuka (in addition to fighter)
    15 pow
+100% vs armour; -25% vs air; -25% vs city

    China

    Soldier-Farmer(replaces warrior, reqs farming)
    3 pow
    Builds farms

Anyways any and all thoughts and comments are welcome!

I love the idea for the Teutonic Knight. You might consider using the Knights Templar or Knights Hosptialler for the French. How do you modify/create unit graphics in CivIV?

      ideas?

      hello,

interesting your ideas.i agree that some extra units were needed, however a lot of improves u can do in the sea field battle, where plenty of ships are missing(medieval dromons, dreadnought, cruisers, etc.)

most of these are great suggestions. I definately want a UU ship for england.

however, a few historical hints. it was iron that made the romans a power in the mediterranean. the reason is that bronze requires copper, which is actually quite rare, but it also requires tin, which is extremely rare, in the ancient times it could only be found in places such as central europe and afghanistan. and the bronze age cultures of egypt and mesopotamia existed long before rome ever became relevant. (rome rose around 250bc, the bronze age cultures rose and fell around 3000-1000bc) While Iron is found just about everywhere, and allows weapons to be made considerably cheaper. also a correction, iron was in its early days actually inferior to bronze the refinement of iron to such a degree came much later. it was its availability that allowed the romans to build great armies and conquer the mediterranean world. they didnt really use bronze...

also, peltasts I believe are roman not greek. (hmm not sure though)

ninjas are assassins. one man. mission is usually to kill a prominent figure of opponents faction. the idea that a ninja could defeat an army of anything is somewhat absurd. they always worked alone, using stealth to kill leaders, not armies.

aslo, more boats please. i want bigger better badder navies. and time to build them...

all other suggestions are great. though some civs might feel left out and you should be careful to ensure balance is not... unbalanced.

          thank you

          my dear prinz,

thank u for your support.i love naval history and units, therefore i m dissapointed with this edition.not onyly for this of course.still no one thought that when u take over an enemy city U MUST take a tech from them, something that decreases much the gameplay in my opinion.
regarding units, there is a huge step from ironclads to iowa battleships but according to the game is very small-WHY?
medieval ships, dromons, galleas, and then ship of the line, then ironclads, armoured cruisers, dreadnoughts, why not included?
also unexpectable to build ironclad with steel!
          steam power is enough.
in general i think that from all civilization series(I,II,III,IV)usually missed something.form the first 2 we didnt demand much since it was the beggining, but from the 2 later we did.and it misses the simplicity that had the 2 previous ones, taking techs when u take over an enemy city and in the city panel why the buildings we build are not appeared???
For gods name,we are using the latest and most expensive video cards to display 3d graphs, yet the stupid programmers didnt thought that????...

Interesting points! Unfortunately i think changing the tech tree so bronzeworking comes after ironworking is a bit outside the scope of this mod. In real life maybe rome didn't have access to the copper&tin but in the random map games they may..

The ninjas are meant for reconnaisance or perhaps picking off weak units trying to make it back to the base. I don't think ninjas always worked alone except in pop culture maybe. They did a lot more than just assassinations too. I don't think it's terribly unrealistic to have them able to destroy units. They could be poisoning them or maybe killing their leaders causing them to scatter or whatever.

There were indeed greek peltasts although they didn't have a monopoly on them.

I will definitely be adding in more unique ships, and I'm definitely seeing a need for some more steps in the shipbuilding technology. Any detailed ideas regarding this would be appreciated.

I will be adding units for all civilizations if I or others can think of enough appropriate ones of course I am always trying to keep an eye on balance as well, but that is difficult and will need lots of playtesting!

For the Americans, perhaps an Apache replacement for the Gunship.

For the Japanese, definitely the Zero.

And for the Chinese, the Long March, a cheaper replacement for the ICBM - or perhaps each adds a bit of science capacity to the city it's located in.
