  • Firaxis definition of 'Epic' ticks me off! Modding challenge!

What does Firaxis say about epic? That you can micromanage the game so it takes longer? Is THAT really epic, or is that boring?

Can we have that choice's name changed from epic to boring?

What might make a game epic? What's the BIGGEST problem with Civ?...ALL of em? I, II, III,...IV?

The biggest problem with Civ is runaway success. When you get on a roll and start engulfing cities like they are potato chips. When there are no more enemies worth conquering. Solve this problem and you have an epic game.

My challenge is a little something I'll call the 'Friends & Family game. Every so often...few hundreds of years, you start accumulating sons, getting long in the tooth, choosing your successor...the empire fractures...or a group of units go renegade under a general and march on the capital, or a city gets stolen by a usurper! Or you have no sons, even worse, you choose your successor but not all your cities agree...

NOOO! not this again! But just think, your enemies will have the same problem.

Anyway, this little problem is what made the real world epic, (and helped keep empires from growing out of control, the bigger they get the worse the problem)) micromanagement, the endless details of life just makes it tedious.

Where did you get the idea that epic means more micromanagement? The Epic mode that is included with the game doesn't work that way, obviously!

Involuntary loss of cities not due to mismanagement or direct action of other players sucks bad. Not a good idea.

Lancer likes to make things up a lot, don't mind him. That's why he's a Republican.

Anyway, that's a rather huge overassumption of what makes the real world "epic." The fracturing of most large empires had little to do with family squabbles.

unless epic is unwinnable, like in Civ3. I can still see the dozens of dozens of captured cities with zero production due to corruptionspread across numerous continents...

There will be 3 settings which affect general game speed. Wether you want to spend 1-3 hours, 1-2 days or 1 week for a single game, it's your choice. Kinda like the "slowed tech research" in SMAC.

No preview I have read said anything about "make games longer by mm". Sure you can still do it, but from what I have heared, you can do pretty well with automating tasks like workers. Heck, you can even handle over the promotion thing.

it says due to mismanagement, which would mean that you weren't prepared.

It would be interesting to have the possibility of revolutions of multiple cities at the same time creating a splinter faction...

                        No, it says "not due."

And that would indeed be unfun. Now, revolution in mismanaged cities would be appropriate.

Epic means the tech progress is slower, forcing you to actually PLAY at the earlier tech levels. PBEMers remember how furious a good number of people were every time someone suggested an accelerated production game ... this is the opposite, essentially. It's not more micromanagement, it's more fighting with horsemen and legions instead of a mad rush for cavalry

I definately read or heard that the epic game was longer because of the mm involved. Where did I hear or read this?
