Problem with this argument that it isn't even that, as many things will not be the same in this new version as they were in the orignal.

One is that they replaced the original leaders leading each nation - and some of the new ones were even founding fathers in the original. And thus we have to conclude there have been changes to the way the founding father system works also.

Another is that the whole aspect of writing a Constitution once you declare independence - where you among other can choose to write in Slavery (going to assume this will have some kind of civic-like effect) - is an entirely new feature.

I think it is safe to say that C4C is NOT 'just a remake of Col' and thus it can't really be used as a reason for not including Portugal.

Furtermore considering the Slavery aspect of the Constitution it sounds very dubios that they didn't include Portugal due their heavy use of slaves in the New World.

The US centric reason is actually the only one that still fits - and yet it doesn't makes sense if they aren't going to be very accurate about other historical aspects anyway.

    • Just drop it CyberChrist. There's no use getting so worked up about it. It's a game.

          I fail to see why.
Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

          • One reason people mentioned earlier for why there should only be the four civs is that they cover four basic areas of the game. Trying to come up with a civilization bonus for the portuguese would be difficult.

But the new screen shots reveal that there will be leaders and leader traits like in Civ4 - not Civ bonuses (or doesn't seem like it at least). So they could totally accommodate a new civ or two.

            • I'm just going to say it. Portugal was not included (and therefore will not be included) because we Americans never heard of them in context of our own government-taught history. We hear about some Portuguese prince who taught the rest of Europe everything they knew about navigation, and then they drop off the face of history (as taught in government schools) almost entirely. There is a brief cameo when we are reminded that the Portugese pretty much invented the African slave trade. And then... nothing.

The Portugese were never our neighbors, nor our competitors. It is mentioned that they conflicted with the Dutch, and the Spanish, and perhaps even the English in the Caribbean... but never the Americans.

I'm not saying this to defend the decision. I'm just saying that if you look at much of Sid's work (Colonization, Railroad Tycoon, Gettysburg and Antietam, possibly others I'm forgetting), Sid clearly displays a fascination with the United States, possibly to a nationalistic degree. The sole exception dealing with this part of the world is Pirates!... and that lacks Portuguese as well. Actually, Pirates! has the same set of nations: English, French, Dutch, and Spanish. So there's kind of a running theme here.

Somebody said they're sure Firaxis knows the history of Portugal. Honestly, I seriously doubt that. They're game makers, not historians... which shows VERY clearly in the Civilization series.

              • I heard of Portugal quite often in my government-taught history...

Several of the Firaxians are history buffs, including Sid, so I'd be careful what you say of people you don't know... They certainly made whatever decision they made on this for gameplay reasons, nothing else.
