Cool Peter Jackson signs on for the Hobbit

    Mithril-dressed Link

NEW YORK (AP) -- Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," a planned prequel to the blockbuster trilogy "The Lord of the Rings."

Peter Jackson is set to oversee the film adaptation of "The Hobbit."

Jackson, who directed the "Rings" trilogy, will serve as executive producer for "The Hobbit." A director for the prequel films has yet to be named.

Relations between Jackson and New Line had soured after "Rings," despite a collective worldwide box office gross of nearly $3 billion -- an enormous success. The two sides nevertheless were able to reconcile, with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) splitting "The Hobbit" 50/50, spokemen for both studios said Tuesday.

"I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line," Jackson said in a statement. "We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth."

Two "Hobbit" films are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, similar to how the three "Lord of the Rings" films were made. Production is set to begin in 2009 with a released planned for 2010, with the sequel scheduled for a 2011 release.

New Line Cinema is owned by Time Warner. (Time Warner is the parent company of CNN.) Sony and Comcast are among the owners of MGM.

    Why two films?

What the world doesn't need right now is another Hobbit film.

If they are going to add as much as they did in the Rings, they will need two.

But unlike LOTR, The Hobbit is a pretty light story. It was meant for kids.

Wait until Peter Jackson is done with it. He added female heroines to LotR when they were already there.

    The Hobbit doesn't have any.

Is it like Kill Bill, which was supposed to be one movie, but was too long, so they decided to split it into two?

I think they could find plenty of material for 2 movies. For the theatrical releases for LOTR, they cut the scenes way too much and the running times were still very long.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Return of the King had to much gay hobbit love near the end. It sickened me. Also, no ones seem to realizes hobbits are just elves born genetic disorders. Hairy feet come from hirsutism and their short stature can be attributed to achondroplasia dwarfism. No wonder Peter Jackson, being a disgusting short neckbeard with many genetic disorders himself, likes hobbits. He is one.

I wonder if they ever dare to put the Silmarillion on screen.

Considering that they plan to make 2 films out of "The Hobbit", the Silmarillion could give stuff for 10 or more movies

I agree with everyone that it is surprising that they intend to stretch the Hobbit to two flims, though. One should be enough.

    What did they add?
Arwen (she shows up for a 1/4 page or something in the books), the ghost army, most of the stuff with Faramir/anything happening in Osgiliath...

The funny thing is they cut out whole portions of the story while adding stuff that added nothing and changed the story quite a bit.

I can't even guess where they'll put the break in the story. Will he divide it into "There" and "Back Again?" No, even he couldn't pad out the epilogue that much. Maybe around the time they reunite following the adventure in the Misty Mts?

When they make that movie they can feel free to include it.

If I had to divide the book, I would do it in the wood elves hall. Isn't Bilbo supposed to be trapped there for a month or so anyways? Well in this case he will be trapped there for a year between releases.
