That's an old one Pekka!
But a good one. That is how ancient fights looked like
Think Sparta, Athens. Being in the first row was considered a priviledge, and the first row was basically pushed forward by those behind. The deeper line usually won.
This is a big fight.
It's in Russia I think.
I was watching some fights tonight because I was bored and didn't feel like doing anything. So anyway, I noticed one thing. I watched loads of like Russian gang fights and all this stuff. They were clearly organized, there were several people filming, there were clearly rules as well.
It's almost like fair fights too. When someone goes down, they don't engage that much anymore. It's obviously a rule. Also they run around to catch breath and stuff like that, so there must be other kinds of rules as well, since the fights aren't vicious.
It isn't even football hooligan type of brawl. There was this one weird video, where like 15 vs 15 guys clashed on a football field, and they did this big clash like 6 or 7 times. So they all retreated, grouped and started a new clash. So it seems to me they like the clash, the battle clash. Also, all these fights begins with that clash, everyone just runs into each other first.
But the video above, now that's a big clash!

I remember when I was watching those fights on YouTube some months go. Gets your adrenalin going just looking at it. BTW those guys are Russians, Spartak supporters vs some other guys. And the guys on the field in the other video you mention are Polish football hoolingans, if we are thinking about the same video. YouTube is probably deleting the really nasty stuff, there are better videos around.
Vet, Yeah it's old but it's big!
It's kind of spectacular when they start getting close and the noise level is rising. I'm thinking wow, we don't need some guy to tell us it's on, because it's on!
About the fight videos, I generally don't like them. The vicious ones I don't like, they are disgusting. Also the ones that aren't set fights, so those are just random violence and beating some victim up. I hate those videos, I don't even watch them if I realize the situation. Makes me angry and disgusted.
But these battle videos are entertaining as far as there's no weapons etc. Like this one, what a clash! The fight portion of it is not that clear or interesting, it's short, it's kind of boring, but it's so big and the prelude to it is exciting.

Serb, that was my first thought as well. Plus the torches, so... likely a fight between football fans.
That's still a way to fight other fans though, because sometimes they just bash and trash pubs abroad and stuff like that. Start fighting in a huge crowd outside the stadium. That's dangerous and lots of people who aren't into that are hurt, so that's just criminal.
This isn't exactly legal either, but I have no problem with these groups fighting when they get isolated and focus on each other.

I despise random violence. Especially *******s beating up random people. I've seen some videos of that, also from Russia I think. Three or four guys attacking some random passerby. Could have been skinheads attacking darkies, but I can't recall. Got my blood boiling!Originally posted by Pekka

Anyway, I like orderly fights which have at least some traces of honor in them. You can't expect a perfectly fair fight, but if both parties have agreed to fight, we have a good start.
My favourites are definitely the Koreans, I love their battles

A good thing though. I wouldn't want to be the first cop on the scene if they didn't run away. It would be slightly intimidating, facing 100 young men ready to trash you.... no way!
Anyway as I went through these clashes, there was a pattern with the rules and the way these were set up. The same pattern continued with other eastern european videos, I can't recognize them except that they aren't Russian but are eastern euro.
They all had the same start. I've never seen that kind of stuff in real life. You see that in the movies, and not even movies with fights but movies with swords and big battles, so it's interesting because I bet a lot of us have thought what it's like to be in that line with a sword, facing few thousand enemies. Absolutely no chance to survive at all!
And what do you do if you guys run into each other with swords? Do you just, jump and hope not to land on a sword and instead get beheaded 1 second later or do you focus on putting your sword through someone running into you or... or what about these guys who have their spears directed at you, there's tons of these spears and then you kind of just run into them. What runs in your head when facing that, I don't know.... I guess you have to make them drink some berzerker drinks made of mushroom and other things.
I'm happy to see old traditions still means something![]()

Vet, yeah, and aside from those videos being disgusting and showing criminal behaviour, these victims are often hurt or injured. When they ambush someone or sneak attack a person, that's always dangerous and that's how we get the sad stories on papers. Makes my blood boil as well. These people aren't looking for a fight. They are looking to injure someone and they enjoy (possibly sexually) about the whole thing.
These particular fights as see in OP, though that's a bit dangerous because so many people, but overall aren't that dangerous and vicious. Sure, something might happen, but they are there to fight and not cut some random old person up with a blade and steal 5 euros from them.

The police and judges in east Europe are still not as effective as those in the West. If they catch you doing that kind of stuff in England you face serious fines and stuff. Even a jail sentence, I think. So it's a big deterrent. Too bad, I'd quite enjoy seeing some northern beserkers in action.

Ordinary fights wouldn't give you a big penalty, at least not in here and I figure not in England either. But if you're involved in these hooligan groups, it's a bit different then, and rightly so.
I don't know about northern europe, I don't think a lot of action is going on. We might have 1 hooligan, but we haven't found him yet. We have such a small football culture in here so we don't have that problem at all. Young people don't imitate the ones abroad because well, we're not good at football. We don't get to go and travel Europe with the national team so .. no one is a hooligan. Hockey is a bit different, people get drunk but not aggressive and definitely not fighting.
Sweden and Norway, I don't know but I don't think they have such a problem that other euro countries have. Sweden might have few teams that have a small groups of hooligans but nothing too big. And we don't have much penalties for it. I don't know, maybe Sweden will step up more, well they've had some action in the past, ti's not like they don't have it but it's just not a big problem yet.

It's definitely idiotism from personal perspective. A single hit to the head from a grown man without gloves can do such serious damage (it can kill, in worst case) that I would never gamble my health in such a fight.Originally posted by Serb In my home city we don't have such clashes between fans. But I think it's fairly normal to find that kind of thing interesting to watch.
Vet, yeah it is dangerous, every blow is potentially lethal. But these are a bit different, for example I can't watch these Bumfights videos. They created a lot of hype when they came out so I downloaded the first one but couldn't watch it through. It was such an abuse of homeless people, it was sickening. And they weren't fights like these, they were instigated by other people who were abusing them and for their own pleasure. That kind of sadism is just something I can't tolerate at all.
But these big clashes, I think they're interesting and entertaining to a certain point, as long as no one is getting seriously trashed when they're down, I think it's just fine.
And about MMA, I'm a huge fan. Been for years, since the mid 90s. Then again it's a sport but I do love it and I can't wait for the weekend for the next UFC to come out! WAR RANDY!!!

Do you remember the last world cup at Moscow? Of course you do. Me and my buddies saw Russia-Finland game at small pub (there were something about 10 people there). The game was pretty nervous and there were two about 40 years old drunkards who pissed us off completely. They were shouting Suomi-Suomi. Hell, if they were Finns, nobody would protest that they support their national team, it's quite normal and understandable. But they were Russian drunkards who find it funny to make the rest of the pub angry. I told them to shut the f*ck up ortherwise they will regret they chose this place to get drunk, but they didn't listen and keep shouting "Finland will beat ya", etc. F*ck, they pissed-off everyone in the pub. After the third period they finally realized that jokes are no more - everyone were nervious as hell prior to overtime, and those two bastards just disappeared while we went outside for a smoke. Damn, had they stayed till the end of the game, they would be a two deadman. Everybody were ready to beat the crap out of them. Bastards.I still hate them.
So, hockey can drive people mad no less than football, me thinks.

I don't know about that Serb. I've seen a lot of games, also in bars and stuff like that, never seen a fight over a hockey game.
I've seen tons of bad behaviour though. People swear a lot, shout at other fans or each other, but not actually fighting physically. It's a taboo in here to fight for hockey. It's a big no no.
I'm sure there's been fights, but they aren't that common and are definitely seen as something unacceptable. Also, there's often quite a bit of "taunting" between national team fans, but I've never seen it getting violent anywhere.
I don't know, I don't get angry after a game. If my team loses and it's a nervous game, I'm usually just sad about it and couldn't care less for the game for the next week or so. If we lose the game early on and it's obvious we can't win it, I just get bored and dont' want to watch it anymore.
So I don't know.. but I know there are tons of obnoxious fans, adn when talking about drunk fans there's tons of obnoxious Finnish fans who travel the world and go the games. These middle aged ****** are usually pretty damn annoying so I'm not surprised they made some people pretty hot headed. And these guys are an embarrasment, we know it. Every single time the games are in Europe or close enough, we know who the most embarrasing fans are. People just go to these games with big bunch of guys, drink for the whole two weeks and just be them idiot selves. It's like a long festival for them. And yes, they're always on TV and we are always embarrased.

Exactly, that's a bit different. I have never even heard of a fight inside a hockey arena or right next to it. I think that's good, because there are kids and it's a sport and you should be able to go and see a game in teh opponent's arena and not be threatend by violence.

I think that's from a documentary, I recall this thing happening. It's also a known fact, that lots of extreme right wingers have joined the ranks of hooligans, including some seriously dangerous individuals.
I also remember this other documentary about the German World Cup that was just held (2006) and there were these English fans who were into rioting, so they tried to get a fight going on with the Germans from pubs. It was hilarious because it didn't go down heavy but this one guys was trying to get everyone fired up "COME ON! WE'RE ENGLISH AND THEY'RE ****ING JERRIES!" and it had all this emotion from WWII and it's like we're battling it out again and these German bastards are going to get it.

I detest the violence and I think it has no part in football fandom. On the other hand, taunting the opposition is essential to enjoying English league football. Who would go to games if you couldn't chant "the referee's a wanker" or sing "You'll never get a job" to the Liverpool fans, or "Cheer up Roy Keane, oh what can it mean, to be a sad mackem bastard with a **** footbal team".I also remember this other documentary about the German World Cup that was just held (2006) and there were these English fans who were into rioting, so they tried to get a fight going on with the Germans from pubs. It's something like this video you posted, large gangs meeting up and a supposed "code of honor" not to use weapons, attack people who are already down and don't initiate a battle when you outnumber the opponents several times over. All three big teams in Stockholm have different gangs that can amass hundreds of fighters on "big days", also in Gothenburg and Helsingborg it's become a really strong culture and "cool" to become a member of these kind of gangs. It's like an extreme sport with facing a large gang that wants to trash you just a few meters away.
Then there is the other kind of hooliganism with disrupting matches from the stands by throwing stuff like flares onto the pitch, threatening players when they move from one rival club to another. My team just signed a player from our worst rivals, first on to move between the teams since 1968, and he received death threats to himself and his family. He had to use bodyguards for a while until the situation calmed down a little, but it's not over.
Myself I have only seen some smaller fights, people throwing stones at us from a bridge in Stockholm and general agitation. Also riot police in Copenhagen smashing everyone in sight once, even young kids in their early teens who had nothing to do with any trouble just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Of coure it's impossible to get some justification against authorities like the police and especially that kind of "special unit".
