That's how it works in SMAC.
Additionally in Civ4 they'll provide connections between cities for resource-distribution purposes.
edit: As far as I recall it's also how it worked in CTP/CTP2. Roads giving resource benefits is unique to civ 1,2 and 3.

Hi everyone
I have found this statement in the pre-release information of civfanatics
"Roads and Rail-Roads will only provide a movement bonus to your units and nothing else. This has been done so the player does not have Roads and Rail-Roads on every tile later on (unlike in Civilization III)."
But there is no link to the site given the info. So my question is, can this be true ? If so, where does the info come from?
Greetings

Yes, let's be optimistic until we have reason to be otherwise...No, let's be pessimistic until we are forced to do otherwise...Maybe, let's be balanced until we are convinced to do otherwise. -- DrSpike, Skanky Burns, Shogun Gunner

If true then this will spell the end of the nasty road and railroad maze so common in Civ3.

And if it's not true, we'll soon find a mod that makes it true I guess![]()

Someone else had mentioned modding it such that you pay maintenace for roads. So you'd pay 1 gold for every so many road squares. Would be a mod I might like to try

Well, I'd hope it was worth building roads more than just from A to B, but I'm pretty sure I manage to live with this too.I guess I'll have lots of idle workers in the game anyway, and if it doesn't give anything to have roads, I'd think it doesn't cost anything either, so who knows.

In CTP corruption & happiness was based on distance BUT distance was determined by movement points so a road decreased corruption and rioting, particularly if your city was on the other side of mountains from the capitol.

IIRC, in Civ3 a road link to the capital reduced city corruption by 15%.
"As far as general advice on mod-making: Go slow as far as adding new things to the game until you have the basic game all smoothed out ... Make sure the things you change are really imbalances and not just something that doesn't fit with your particular style of play." - WesW

Maintainence costs for roads would be a wonderfull idea! If buildings in cities need maintainence to keep from crumbling then so do roads. Unless of course it causes some kind of gameplay issue.
But why stop at roads. Doesn't irrigated/mined/fortressed squares need maintainence? Maybe it would be a little too upsetting to gameplay to pay for all this stuff.

1 Gold piece for 3 tiles of road doesn't sound to bad.
The most frugal player would barely build enough roads to connect all the cities.
And 1 Gold piece for a RR, assuming unlimited movement, would sound about right too.

Unlimited movement.![]()

Doubtful... but we'll see.
I'll still be building roads everywhere on my land if there's no fee. If somebody lands on your island, you're going to want to make sure you rush units to confront them before they can get near your cities. A road on every square will allow you do that quicker.
Movement bonus gets my troops to war faster.

Yes, IMHO it will end in unbalancing or raising income per square to keep up.Originally posted by Cookie Monster

We now gain an amount of gold that can be considered as value after common (upkeep) costs.
