  • The Next Generation of RTS Games...

Inspired by the following quote, found in Apolyton / Misc news section:

"Hunt Valley, Maryland (February 29, 2000) Multimillion-selling game developers Brian Reynolds,
Jason Coleman, Tim Train, and David Inscore have announced the formation of Big Huge
Gamesâ„¢, Inc. Headquartered in Hunt Valley, Maryland, Big Huge Gamesâ„¢ plans to create the
next generation of real-time strategy games, with a definitive focus on cutting-edge
technology and aimed at mass-market sales."

So what is the next generation of RTS? Does this mean that Reynolds et. al. are sick of TBS? Does this mean that TBS is going to die out?

It might... but if the next generation RTS is really that awesome, it might be ok... I have my doubts though...

Anyway, once we get civ3 we'll be happy for many years to come (or so I hope)

Does anyone think that Civ III will be delayed due to "managerial difficulties?"

I am not knocking anybody at the Firaxis team, but the fact that so many are leaving has got to make an impact.

The mass market & all the younger players need fast 3D adrenaline games. It's a question of sales and money, so we can expect developers to make more state-of the art RTS and very few TBS . I hope at least Civ III will be worth the wait despite the big "departures" at Firaxis, and in my mind a more realistic release date is not before fall 2001 instead of an optimistic winter 2000-01.

Obviously I'll stick with SMACx for the months to come.

Oh boy will CIV3 be delayed... after these bail-outs, even fall 2001 is an optimistic release estimate. Firaxis will be all Dinos for the rest of this year. A game of CIV3's caliber can't be properly developed in just a couple of months in 2001, especially now that the original designers are gone.

If "Dinosuars" turns out to be a good game, it will be a pleasant surprise for me... and I was obsessed with dinos as a kid.

RTS, though, will probably stay around as long as their are people like us. Those first-person, kill-anything-that-moves-with-your-chainsaw-and/or-rocket-laucher games will hopefully die off as more and more of their fans become criminally insane .

So, whatever the effect of people leaving Firaxis, I'm optomistic that we'll eventually get a really well done Civ 3.

Actually, this dino game has me a little worried.

I wonder if Sid is tired of the traditional TBS game, and this is his attempt to try something new. I also wonder if Sid's bold new ideas were "different enough" from Brian Reynold's ideas to cause the Big Huge MESS of a half-finished-Civ-III-project syndrome.

My worry is that the dino game will set the stage for Civ III - that its going to be a flop- and nobody is going to tell us that until Dinos is released.

Slingshot, get updated my friend. Sid Meier is 'bored' from the traditional TBS genre since the release of the original Civ. The sequels were directed by Brian Reynolds, only helped by Sid advices.

All right, Dienstag! Those 1st player games always made me feel sick after a while.

Thanks for the update, NoviceCEO. I understand Brian's key role in the evolution of Civ/SMAC.

But Novice, please continue the thought... We have Sid who is tired. We have Brian and the gang who have gone their own way. Now what? How do you see Sid's Dino game influencing Civ III? Do you think we will see a blend of RTS and TBS? I appreciate your thoughts .

But I don't wanna play Dinociv III !!!

How would you like your explorer eaten up by a dino?

I am very scared of the possibility that civ III will now become something it's not meant to be. I'm afraid now. I'm afraid it won't come out. I'm afraid it will come out and then it'll stink. I wanna have a decent civ game!!!

If CivIII has any RTS elements, I will not play it.

Slingshot, we all diverge a lot when talking about civIII connection with Dino's. Take a look over the recent posts on the Dino's forum to have my updated comments over this connection.

                            Keep posting up.

                              Novice:

I don't mind the divergence. In fact, it is fun to read.

You have lots of good ideas, though, and I wanted to hear what you think about Sid running the show without the other Civ giants.
